But if reddit disappears, where am I going to go to see comment sections full of insufferable assholes?

Reddit’s constant effort to control the narrative is kind of catching up with them. They push content they deem acceptable and silence content they don’t like. At least lemmy is a real place on the internet.

Step 1: Sell data to AI companies Step 2: ??? Step 3: Profit
They are now finding out step 2 is getting absolutely destroyed by AI not sending people along to their platform. And the profit in step 3 is for the AI companies, not for them.
These CEOs are so shortsighted it’s beyond belief. Sure Google paid hundreds of millions for the data, but in turn it’s a death sentence for the platform. But hey it was money in the short term right?

Yeah, what did we fucking say. I had some millions of karma on reddit. Then they shut down my app, and I up and left. A good chunk of other members of posters and commenters left as well. They shrugged us off. We’re only a few percent.
Except for the 90-9-1 rule. Of a user base on average 90% will lurk/vote only, 9% will comment, and 1% will post. So it doesn’t matter if it’s a small percentage of your total users, if it’s a good chunk of the people who post and comment you’re fucking yourself.
Just checked and I have crossed over 1000 posts here and have tens of thousands of comments. All unmonitized, all useless to reddit. Enjoy your AI comments, reddit.

The problem that the current Reddit leadership had was that they didn’t want to share power with the stakeholders it had previously relied on to generate growth. Reddit was getting free content, moderation, and even some dev resources. There was a path in which Reddit could have maintained its ecosystem while still being profitable, but spez chose to be like every other social network.
