For example I post “Outside of medical need, I wish people would stop bringing food into the town library because it causes ants which is why it’s against the rules.”
And I get replies like
- I’m being insensitive because some people have a medical need to have food with them
- Who am I to say what people should do in the library?
- A rant about libraries in general
- A love letter to libraries
- No discussion of food v ants

Short answer, people are stupid assholes.
Long answer, because nuance is a skill that you have to learn, and we live in a society that doesn’t value it and basically hates it. Nuance has no place in 15 second video clips, that THE dominant form of media consumption for younger people.
The only place I find nuace is in long-form media. But most folks don’t consume it anymore, so it’s not a part of their life anymore.

The loss of long-form discourse is so noticeable in people’s interactions! In particular online, where everything is parceled and broken down to minimal length
