Enlightened centrism is such a copout

    source
    • HRDS_654@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

It definitely ignores the nuance of the situation, that’s for sure. In some cases it’s not even nuance.

Calling two assholes assholes isn’t centrism, it’s observation.

There’s a difference between expecting to find a reasonable middle ground between unreasonable positions, and understanding that two sides of a dispute are so far apart that there is no middle ground. Israel will not treat Palestinians equally, and Hamas won’t stop until they have wiped Israel off the map.

Regardless of which side you support, there are legitimate concerns about the actions and attocities of each side. Neither side sees the other as human, as deserving of equal consideration. Both claim divine justification in their actions, and both have legitimate existential fears from the opposing side.

To ignore the atrocities committed by one side is to deny the reality of the situation. Bombing civilians is unacceptable. Raping and slaughtering children is unacceptable. Murdering journalists is unacceptable. There’s no “better” or “worse” act of violence. War is hell, and the people who suffer most are not the ones who choose it.

Who started it? Who has escalated it? Neither side has a claim to the moral high ground, and nothing short of eradication will cause either side to stop fighting.

Peace will is only possible if there is forgiveness on both sides. If leaders and civilians alike are willing to accept that there is no justice for war crimes, and there is no balance to violence, then maybe angels will dance on pinheads and monkeys will fly out of my butt.

So, you might as well pick a side and then hope they wipe out their opponents. But you’ll have to kill every single man, woman, and child, because this is a holy war, and there is no victory in half measure, and no room for nuance when God joins the fray. Win or die. Obliterate or sow the seeds of your own destruction.

That’s how Israel feels. That’s how Palestine feels. The enemy is less than human, a disease to be utterly destroyed.

And if you disagree, some 14 year old internet stranger is going to lump you in with centrists who can’t tell the difference between Nazis and everyone else who hates Nazis.

Ah yes the enlightened centrist. Israel has been dominating Palestine for ~75 years and have been in a position to end the conflict for ages but decide not to because they’d rather slowly kill Palestine than give their people freedom.

But surely they’re both equally evil, eh?

Hamas is not a political revolution of Palestine. It’s a jihadist group that kills just as many Palestine children as they do Israeli. Palestine deserves so much better. I hate centrism and cynicism, but there is no good outcome to this fight.

Alright yeah Israel is worse, but that isn’t what people are talking about right now. It’s possible to support the Palestinians but not Hamas. Fighting back is fine, but targeting civilians isn’t. If they had just attacked the actual oppressors, the conversation would be completely different.

      • bl4ckblooc@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

You could say the exact same thing about Israel. This isn’t a gotcha when Israel has been killing civilians for decades in their apartheid.

      • Ibaudia@lemmy.world ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

Hamas’ terrorism is bad, but it’s also a predictable result of treating Palestinians like subhuman cattle for generations. Israel had the power to prevent situations like this, but they used it to oppress instead.

Nice post Racists4TransRights. Along with your other two posts of week old articles about peace activists being among the hostages taken by Hamas. Certainly up to date information about what is currently happening on the ground! You certainly are ignoring the “Infowars” yes siree. No agenda behind this 33 minute old account. Nope, just an enlightened centrist who happens to only post about Isreal and being a racist. Nothing to see here.

Well, you deleted the post but you were asking if racists can support trans rights. So theres that. Its whack to be inclusive to LGBTQ+ people but not minorities. Why withhold love from one and give it to the other? The fight for minority rights is the fight for human rights. The fight for trans rights is the fight for human rights. It seems intentionally hateful.

  • DumbAceDragon@sh.itjust.works ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

Ah yes, the big brain position of “I stand for nothing and don’t feel like taking a side because if I do someone’s feelings might get hurt.”

Yes, conflict does often come with nuance, but to both-sides it and dismiss it completely is ignorant and apathetic.

Israel has a significant of position of power over Palestine that they are using to enforce an Apartheid state instead of pushing for progress. Yes, governments representing both regions have done bad things going back centuries, but today Palestine’s terrorism speaks to their desperation, while Israel’s terrorism speaks to their willingness to be cruel to civilians.

  • Blackout@kbin.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨year⁩ ago

I'm pretty sure Palestine never invited Israel to come in and subjugate them. This issue actually has a well defined start date and I guess the end will be the end of one party or the other. It's a shame.
