I absolutely blame social media for a lot of today’s brainrot. Everyone has a soapbox to spread hate/lies for monetary gaine. People that should stfu (myself included, I don’t have profiles that can do anything, just comment sometimes) and live life.
Why everyone is quitting social media

It’s the algorithms that promote and amplify the bullshit. This is ostensibly in the name of “engagement” but I’ve ceased to believe that’s the main motive long ago. The owners of the major platforms very clearly use them to promote their far right agenda. Not all of them are as blatant as Musk but it’s there on all of them. - shalafi@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago- Good example is the antivax bullshit. That would never have spread when I was young. People would, rightly, treat you like an idiot. They would have had no audience.
- thermal_shock@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago- Oh absolutely.

- ABetterTomorrow@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago- Fuck, what are people waiting for, it’s been bad for a longgggggg time. Quit 2014 and never looked back. I have so much time back for………chores and being enslaved to my cats.
- Aljernon@lemmy.today 3 weeks ago- Right now, I use facebook to 2% check up on relatives living in other states and 98% spread political messaging. - shalafi@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago- I’m too afraid to put my politics on FB. That’s prime real estate for AI to look into. I’m a loud mouth around here because I doubt the administration will ever have the resources to look at little old us.

I really wish people would differentiate between “social media” and “corporate owned algorithmic social media” because there’s a huge difference.

No there isn’t. Not as it affects your mental health. Bots are on the fediverse fueling the same paranoia.

The core issue with social media isnt the medium its the platforms and how they influence user behaviour.
On the fediverse there does exist some of the same issues as Instagram etc but instead of the platform working to keep the user in this cycle of negative feedback and behaviour the fediverse gives the user the tools and even encourages the user to use in a healthier manner. Examples being settings to toggle inf scroll, content warning, keyword filtering, chronological feed, no ads, no UI Dark Patterns.

No
Facebook and Lemmy have very different algorithms, which is the part that fuels that

Are there bots on lemmy? Not that I’ve noticed and these nerds would surely sniff them out and scream. I think we’re too small, flying under the radar.
If you were deploying bots, for whatever reason, wouldn’t you concentrate on the largest user bases? We’re nothing.
