  Bet the right wingers are going wild over Muhammed being at the top.

  For those “concerned” it’s important to remember these three facts -

  • Statistics means that if 5 boys in 95 are named Muhammed, it’s going to be one of the most popular names
  • Many cultures name their sons a variation of Muhammed, but they go by their second name mostly
  • Muhammed has been one of the most common names on the planet for several decades now

  I’m more confused by Noah being so popular. What’s brought that on?

    Hahaha that’s totally jogged a memory for me - there’s this right wing guy on YouTube called Tim Pool, and he went on a weird little rant like a year or two ago about how he saw this AI video of a room with a glass wall, overlooking a village in Christmas time. It’s snowing outside, but it’s cosy inside the room, with a TV playing old cartoons, something like that – he’s going on and on about how nostalgic that is and then he’s like:

    “…and that’s all going away. Because people keep calling their kids Mohammed.”

    Absolutely laughed my arse off, you honestly couldn’t write a character like that 😂

  We were going to name our daughter Amelia but decided against it due to it being so popular last year (who wants to be the fourth girl in the class with the same name?). Instead we went with Lilith.

    My sister is pregnant and she keeps texting me baby names.

    I’ve tried telling her that it’s perfectly acceptable to have a boring name. She has a boring name, I don’t have a boring name I have a unique name, and I really wish I had a boring name.

    Ultimately though you can stay safe by not naming any kid after a TV series character when the series has not yet completed, I.e. Khaleesi and ensuring the name is spelt in the normal manner, and not something like Kylie but spelt Kailee

      We had extensive criteria so Lilith was chosen based on that (it's a pre-existing name, it can be as formal or informal as she likes, etc..). The goal wasn't to have a unique name but I'm tickled that there'll probably be a load of Lilys in her class!

  I think the real take away here is that in 2024, more people named their kid “Awesome” than “Cuthbert”.
