Google settles shareholder lawsuit, will spend $500M on being less evil

  The company will have to form a board-level committee devoted to overseeing the company’s regulatory compliance and antitrust risk, a rarity for US firms. This group will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai. There will also be reforms at other levels of the company that allow employees to identify potential legal pitfalls before they affect the company. Google has also agreed to preserve communications. Google’s propensity to use auto-deleting chats drew condemnation from several judges overseeing its antitrust cases.

  I guessed that’s good. But it feels like slapping a bandaid on an amputated leg. Like in the grand scheme of things it won’t change anything to do with the most evil stuff google does (surveillance capitalism).

    Yeah it seems to merely be a business decision, less about a conscience and more about avoiding further anti-trust suits.

    The only point of this is to appear to have done something about it and creating scapegoats for when this continues to happen.

    And if these commitees ever get in the way of profits, then they, and their families, will be crushed mercilessly in a hidden way that not even them will understand how or why, let alone be able to prove anything.
