Hurley turned down Kentucky’s 90-100m for 8 years. Lakers’ will have to top that by a good margin.

Yeah the Lakers aren’t flush with cash like some other owners so they must be confident he’s their coach now and for a rebuild post-Lebron if they’re going to make a compelling offer.
Topping $100m/8 would put his salary in Pop/Spo territory and would likely take a longer term to get him to accept which means it will be costly if things don’t workout.

Actually Lakers are one of the most profitable franchises in the league because of the size of their following. Coaches’ salaries do not count towards salary cap as well so they can afford it. For instance their operating income was 159m last year. They can afford to pay Hurley $12-15m per.

Bob Hurley Sr. turned down a lot of jobs in his day to stay at a smaller school that eventually ran out of money. So there is precedence within the family to stay put.
But college sports in general are falling apart under NIL and new transfer rules. Everybody who can get out is getting out. It’s easier to know who is on an NBA team than a college team these days. There’s just more continuity there, instead of having to rebuild everything from scratch every year.
Also, college is consolidating around B1G and SEC … UConn might soon find itself without the donor base to compete.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Dan left. The NCAA in its current state doesn’t deserve him.
