I wonder if it is to deter people from taking out 3rd party only?

Through some sort of weirdness of the insurance industry it has turned out to be cheaper to get comprehensive insurance for my car than third party. Renewal of the third party with RACV was going to be just over $500, a basic comprehensive policy with AAMI is $342. Even with AAMI the third party policy would have been more expensive. I have no idea why, but obviously the underlying risk assumptions for the policies have some sort of different risk calculations that work out in my favour.

My 3rd party with AAMI was $200/yr.

You must come across as a safer driver than me for some reason. Maybe Subaru drivers tend to be wild and reckless.

1 out of the 3 people I know with a Subaru was a bit of a hoon. He was fond of a good pedal to the metal on the tulla

It does not seem to be an across the board thing, just Suncorp and AAMI (apparently Suncorp bought AAMI recently, so basically the same company). And RACV had lower premiums for including fire & theft than without.
The comprehensive insurance gives you a few more options with excess and amount insured and I thought it might be the difference, but even making sure the excess was the same it was cheaper to have comprehensive. I wonât complain - but I will budget for an increase next year in case it is a one-off glitch that wonât be repeated!

Iâve got to sort out new car insurance soon, so all the comments about it today are really helpful. Have been with RACV for years but it might be time to switch
