It’s not completely illegal, just illegal for recreational use. I’m a medical cannabis patient and use it manage symptoms of CPTSD (mainly insomnia and night terrors). It was not a difficult process in my experience.
I agree it should be legalised for recreational use though. But that would impact the profits for the alcohol and tobacco companies, so I don’t see that changing unfortunately. I have hope, but I’m also realistic in that respect.

It was known as cannabis exclusively up until the 1920s where there was a scare about it in the US when it was relabelled marijuana. It’s always explained as some new sex drug the kids are taking to scare people.
Nixon ran another scare campaign on marijuana to help his ailing presidential bid, and often a condition of accepting aid money from the US is to take on certain laws domestically, such as their weird drug policy

the other interesting angle was related to hemp, mexicans, a bunch of petrocompanies, forestry dudes, nylon, DuPont etc had a big say in its prohibition. I’m not sure how much of it is true though.
