Itâs strange how us older ex-metalheads are the first different generation music wise
Our parents were horrified by our taste in music. Their parents were horrified by their taste in music, their parents were horrified by their taste in music
Weâre the first generation that listens to our kidsâ music and goes

Same with mine. Sheâs the reason I love Rammstein. We share music with each other a lot, itâs awesome. My dads more old fashioned and likes classic rock but heâll tolerate me and my brother playing our favourite metal songs for him at least!

Yeah my father was not having in when I was a teen but thankfully they never tried to get me to listen to something else, it was fine as long as it was in my room lol.

I got my mom who turns 70 this year into Dog Fashion Disco. She loves it.

Thatâs a testament to the tolerance of millennials. We are more open minded and will at least listen to what our kids have to say.

I wasnât super into metal when I was a kid, I was more into funk and blues. But then my son decided to put on some garbage than he calls funk music. I was disgusted and promptly changed the song to sam and Dave.

Iâm really into new metal bands, though because they are constantly releasing stuff. There are bands out there like Black Breath that will still melt your face off, but I really like the more experimental side of metal, with bands like Abstract Void, Unreqvited, and Botanist all pushing the envelope of what metal is.

Itâs the same though isnât it? While itâs not the reason why we liked the music we liked (more punk than metal for me but same difference) it was always a bonus if your parents didnât like it. Thatâs exactly the reaction that kids are getting from their parents now!
Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee â¨2⊠â¨months⊠ago
It is! But Iâm glad you understand what I meant!
Absolute_Axoltl@feddit.uk â¨1⊠â¨month⊠ago
Oh I totally did

Well there are two areas to explore here. The quality of the music and itâs message. And the parenting we endured. I became a metal head for both reasons. My parents music didnât resonate with me. The over simplified music structure just bored me. There wasnât anything epic about it. And then the message didnât resonate when it was all happy rose gardens and unicorns. My dad was an abusive asshole. Metal gave me that angry outlet.
At least my mom understands where I come from even she doesnât understand why I listen to what I listen to. She divorced him and shit changed. Now my son loves metal and his mom doesnât get it.

Yeah I hear you, those experiences would no doubt stear you to something that provided an outlet. But, and I want to acknowledge that Iâm not dismissing anything you endure, ultimately rebellion is what weâre talking about and the eventual outlet is almost irrelevant.
Iâm glad youâre able to share music you like with you son.
GladiusB@lemmy.world â¨1⊠â¨month⊠ago
Well I think everyone rebels in one way or another. How each kid does that is up to them.
