I started out with dokuwiki but it unexpectedly stopped working. I caved and used the default wordpress. Wordpress isn't actually popular, it's just the default provided by most ISP.

Has anyone used Wix to make a website? Iâm thinking of creating an author website but have zero experience in making them so if possible Iâd love to use something idiot proof and hear Wix is good for that.

I have used Wordpress before and might have to bite the bullet. Wix is a bit too expensive for me.

I use Wordpress and itâs not that user friendly, but is achievable if you are willing to fiddle around with things. Different templates have different options, I spent a fair bit of time at the start just doing a rough sample and changing around various settings to figure out what they did. The biggest issues I had was using too many higher resolution photos at the start which slowed down loading times a lot, and at one point an upgrade broke a few things so I had to go through and re-link photos and I lost the side bar and shortcuts (which one day I will probably get around to recreating).

Turns out wordpress is more expensive than Wix. Who knew?

I had a client engage a web developer who in-turn used Wix to create a basic site. It was a pretty negative experience for us, but it was cheap to host. We had issues splitting off a dev/staging site in particular. Itâs been about 6 years, my memory is foggy and the product may have improved.
Wix might be ok for a sole trader and a quiet website though. I wouldnât recommend it for any business that wanted to regularly maintain/update their site.

Iâve been using Wordpress lately and thereâs been a decent learning curve with that. Iâve persevered but itâs far from idiot proof. Have a look at Squarespace, that was the other option I was considering and is more beginner friendly.
