It’s for attention. This group, in particular, always goes for high profile stunts that they know will get widespread media coverage. They targeted the Wimbledon and the Ashes last year. Another group glued themselves to the road during the men’s road cycling World Championships and the race had to be stopped for ages because they took so long to be removed.
It is the behaviour of people who have become so obsessed with and radicalised by a single issue that they are willing to disrupt, damage or destroy literally anything else even to move the needle slightly. Those vegan protestors who repeatedly target restaurants and make life hell for the employees and owners have the same mental condition.

I think the simplest answer that any movement, once it gets large enough, will eventually end up with a critical mass of idiots that are capable of and willing to do something like this. Then there’s the conspiracy nut part of my brain that thinks it possible there are groups of people that do this shit that are paid by the opposition to discredit the movement at large. Take your pick.
