    fuck me i figured it out lmao. it took me a second but your comment in combo with what the mod said made it click.

    1. lemmy is very anti tankie (rightfully so)
    2. NCD has aesthetics that make it look similar to tankie stuff despite not being such.
    3. they probably have a history of getting backlash; for this reason they are sensitive to criticisms of being tankies or other hate groups (hence all the seemingly weird rules about no genuine posting/dont try to get us banned)
    4. and them i come in like a dumbass comparing them to a well-known group of real bigots. trying to be edgy and matching their tone, i unknowingly did the only thing that could make them angry.
    5. boom, banned.

    sigh, my bad yall. thanks for coming into this shitpost to help me understand. feel free to let me know if i’m missing any pieces but this is making a lot of sense. if i had this context earlier i would have acted differently, hoping maybe this context can help others out 😭

      I can’t think of another platform that has more tankies than Lemmy.

      I love the idea of the fediverse and I want to see people take social media out of the hands of sociopath corporations. But as it is now, Lemmy is packed full of propaganda aligned with authoritarian governments like the Kremlin and CCP.

        yeah i could have clarified this point better sorry. it’s not that lemmy doesn’t have a big tankie population it’s that the rest of lemmy is very sensitive to those authoritarian tendencies due to the sheer prevalance of them.

        i’m pointing to the reaction to the trend, rather than the trend itself. hope that makes sense.

    From my experience, “tanky” just means socialist/communist, which is an obviously idiotic, reductivist generalization. Based on actual reality, I don’t know a group of people it makes more sense to call tankies than the NCD crowd.

      Nope, tankie refers to someone who supports using military force against civilians, typically to quell an uprising. Those people do tend to be Internet communists these days.

        Like I said, I know what you all use it to mean and the historical context of the term, but language evolves, I just applied it more logically and obviously. Mine doesn’t need historical context, a tankie is someone who likes tanks, jet fighters, battleships, trebuchets, etc. You know, large-scale murder fanbois. Like, yeah the hexbear memes are cringey and largely illogical, but half of them are about lgbt+ stuff or just nothing at all. The NCD memes are literally all about war. The whole basis of socialism is striving towards a society where everyone has what they need, not striving towards a society where everyone has a home-defense AK.

      To supplement the other answer here, Lemmy is home to a (relatively) large community of people who LARP as leftists. They claim exclusive access to the moral high ground, while uncritically parrotting state propaganda from Russia, China, the DPRK, and anyone else who appears to stand against western hegemony. Their sole creed is that the USA is the Great Satan, and obviously anyone who opposes Satan should be heeded. Tribal dipshits that rarely argue in good faith; in behavior, not dissimilar to former residents of r/the_donald.

      It emphatically does not mean that. Tankies tend to shill for Russia and China (CCP), neither of which is communist or socialist. I don't even mean that in a "no true scotsman" way, they are literally market economies with astronomical wealth inequality.

    Every time I open an NCD meme, it has a gun or a tank or a military drone or some other implement of murder and destruction. I’ve never seen one of these supposed genocide-defending “communists” in 20+ plus years on the Internet, so I repurposed the term to make more sense.
