With no ageism intended, I see folks who are old enough that I wish they were retired still working way too often. Particularly at grocery stores (I think they’re partially working there to get the employee discount on groceries).

I think some do it because they don’t know what else to do with their time honestly. A lot of older folks basically defined their entire existence by their job. Then they retire and have “nothing to do”. They don’t do or have any hobbies.
Like man, I would love to retire, even better if I could now, while I am young-ish. I could spend the days playing video games, or go walk all the local trails looking for birds and bugs, or just go to all the random little small town festivals in a 100 miles radius listening to all the random live music.
There is just, a lot in the world out there. But too many have no idea, or they have been hammered all their life that anything not work is frivolous, or they worked themselves to death and just can’t get around anymore.
It’s sad.

Nosey gocery store employee who asks questions about peoples personal lives!
Its usually this tbh. the amount of “I’m bored of retirement and I get extra cash to spoil the grandkids.” is pretty dang high. they usually only work like 20ish hours a week.
the ones who work a full 40 are doing it for healthcare or they need the money.

You reminded me of a funny anecdote.
There is this older guy sometimes working the produce area in Kroger, and I was buying produce, he was stocking.
And he asks “You doing ok?” In this… Tone of voice, that had me wondering for a moment if I was. Like, why would you ask that way, in that tone, if I was not stroking out or bleeding from some place I am unaware of.
I have heard him ask other people this way too while shopping. It’s just his tone but it actually kind of freaked me out.

Yesterday I ordered a pizza from dominos. The delivery driver took almost 5 minutes just to park and grab the pizza from his back seat. I was wondering wtf was going on, so I opened the door and saw him hobbling toward my steps with a cane. The man was at least 70. I quickly ran to get my wallet and tipped him whatever cash I had on hand. The pizza didn’t taste as good as it usually did.

I was talking to someone the other day that got scammed out of their retirement savings.
Yes, he was an idiot for falling for it so hard.
However, he’s going to be working late into his retirement years.

You know, if you were the guy in this post, struggling away at your desk at 72 years old, knowing that you’re essentially paying every day for a mistake you made 40 years ago.
I think it would be something like, say a bad car accident that left you disabled, or maybe one of your passengers died.
