Southwest lived long enough to become the villain
It’s because the airlines are monetarily incentivised to board slowly with assigned seats and group numbers, and you also spend more time in the boarding lobby where you can make expensive purchases.
This isn’t a conspiracy, either. They admit to it. Southwest Airlines used to brag about not doing it, and Delta announced the change to it a long time ago.

Yea I will forever miss the era when flying Southwest was a “we all understand the assignment” situation. It’s been a while since then, unfortunately.

I’ve always thought it would make so much more sense to board the back seats first, but the monetary incentive means reason and sense get thrown out the window
