I never understood why they burned witches but now I see how that would be a satisfying conclusion to some events.

Why? They were well-read women, aka “woke women” so they “sent a message” (don’t mess with the patriarchy). Also, King James, his Witch General Finders, and the “demonologists” were all men, and they found women an easier target to do bad things too.
