We use, if needed, apostrophes or upticks. 2’999,95. No danger of messing up between . and , that way.
Also let’s just wait until that person learns that not every country separates into blocks of 3 and how many options of mixing and matching there are in use.
I know the Indians have their 2 digit 3 digit thing, who else does interesting groupings ?
Wish everyone just followed the ISO norm. It dictates that you can either use a period or a comma as decimal separator. And for the thousands separator don’t use it, or use a space.
Space is what ISO recommends using.

Separators aren’t useless; they help greatly in reading large numbers.
