Comment on MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls appears to block SteamOS / Linux
ampersandrew@lemmy.world 2 days agoThere are still ways to cheat with legitimate inputs. You can have a cheat that auto detects when to use Baiken’s parry, for instance, and never let you land a hit. That’s one I’ve seen before. That said, it’s so rare that anti cheat is going to cost you more customers than it protects.

When a player does something super-human over and over I’d say that’s pretty easy to detect server-side.

It takes a trained eye to detect something like the above. They’ll even have toggles to adjust how often the computer cheats for them. Automating this detection will lead to false positives. But like I said, even without anti cheat, cheating is so rare.

For what it’s worth, the issue isn’t the rarity; it’s the scope of impact and undermining of the integrity of the product.
For highly competitive games, even the ability for players to say “there are cheaters, I know there are, and so I think that person is one of them” is a long-term sentiment drain that is not trivial. There are internal research numbers on what exposure to a single cheater does to players’ perception of game integrity and trust in the fairness of their experience, and it’s really really bad

At the skill level you’re likely to see a single cheater in a fighting game, you’ve already learned and conquered much of what the game has to show you, and I doubt that running into a cheater a few hundred hours later is going to deter you from competing. In this genre and community, we also know that ranked doesn’t count for as much as tournament results, online or off, and they’ll ban cheaters if they find them, no sweat.

What is super human today could be considered just elite level tomorrow. Have you seen how pros play classic snes Tetris these days? It’s wild.

Oh yeah of course. Pack it up everybody, let’s not even try. We’ll just accept rootkits on our systems.
