Singapore’s solution is similar to the Chinese one. There’s a limited number of car permits, and you can’t buy or import a car unless you have one. They change hands for more than the price of a car. One side effect, though, is that having a car in itself has become a status symbol.

Except their criminal system involves punishments like caning and executions, the latter applying to drug mules. It’s barbaric.

Singapore is effectively a one-party state, with a nominally democratic system expertly managed to prevent opposition parties from getting anywhere near power. If you ignore the question of Marxist-Leninist iconography, it’s closer to China than a lot of people would admit (though is connected to the open internet).
William Gibson famously called it “Disneyland with the death penalty” in a WIRED article in the 90s.

Welp, they don’t have it all figured out. In context I am impressed with how rapidly Suharto massively boosted and stabilised the country from the mess it was left to him in. It was brutal, but effective, and I can’t fault that. And then his successors have largely kept Suharto’s ethos of development, while reestablishing rights and freedoms to everyone Suharto made illegal.

Personally I prefer them to be canned after the execution, like sure some people prefer the freshness but I think it’s just inhumane, like it’s no different than killing a crab by boiling it.
They wonder why the world doesnt want them, it’s because they keep adulterating the supply with drug mules. If they just stopped adding mules to the mix it would probably taste much better.
