    No they got rid men-only tournaments in the 1980s. Women can enter “men’s” (now called open) tournaments now, just not the other way around. Women’s tournaments exists because open tournaments are still almost entirely male events and male chessplayers are just like any other males. So they want to encourage women to play chess by giving them a way to stay away from us while they play. It’s understandable imho.

    US Chess (the US federation) allows trans players in women’s tournaments with the rule that you can only transition once (details: new.uschess.org/…/us-chess-transgender-policy.pdf ). I think that FIDE (the international federation) that doesn’t allow MTF in women’s events. The biggest chess country is still Russia and so Russia has a big influence on FIDE policy and the FIDE president (Arkady Dvorkovich) is from there. So you can’t really blame this one on Trump if you have a problem with it. Maybe talk to Putin.

      Did I say otherwise? I simply explained why “gendered chess tournaments” were ever a thing in the first place. There’s nothing for you to disagree with, so weird start.

      So you can’t really blame this one on Trump if you have a problem with it.

        As a buttinsky bystander, I think the Trump mention was more general just because he does ruin pretty much everything, but you are spot-on about the origin of gendered tournaments.

      I’m not really disagreeing with your main points, but ZeroCool gave the correct answer to the BCsven’s question as to how they came to exist.

      As Wikipedia put it:

      “Women were generally not permitted to join chess clubs until the early 1900s. Once allowed in, they were largely limited to competing against other women.”

      That weasel-wording ought to be:

      “Chess clubs were run and funded by men, who did not permit women to join until the early 1900s. Once the men allowed women in the club, they didn’t allow them to play against men, only among themselves.”

      Women couldn’t own property and any money they had belonged to their husband or father so they had to accept these rules.
