It’s the lowest-tech device that can do this with sufficiently low running costs to make it free. Much better than the more common infrastructure of QR codes and a server.
And there are hiking trails with information panels that have this technology (the button switches languages) for accessibility to the visually impaired.

And capacitors that last as long as the longest track so you crank it up in a few seconds and don’t have to keep turning.
