2007 is smack dab in the middle of that mid 00s grey-brown color palette design disaster era. Every game from then looks way worse than they should because of it.

I’ve been wanting to play AC1 for a long time but my ass has been soiled with new high end graphics ever since I played Unity and Origins. AC1 just looks so… grim and dull. I had a fun time playing AC2 and was surprised how deep the story went. It also helps it was one of the games that my computer could barely run back in the day. Controls were flimsy but you get used to it over time. The only hiccup that prevents me from playing AC2 again is the Ubisoft launcher which rarely works on my end.

While I was playing AC1 I was going to myself “wow. This reminds me of Metal Gear Solid 3 with how it looks”. I remember that game also being the grey-brown color

It’s absolutely all over that time period. I was firing up Lost Odyssey (2008) on an emulator recently and it’s there too. It’s also part of the reason Dragon Age: Origins looks so ugly. I could probably go on listing examples. I have no idea how or why Real Is Brown got so popular, but I’m glad we’re over it now.

wouldn’t say that the graphics of AC1 is bad, the cities just looked all the same. To me what was much more of a problem was the very repetitive gameplay for most of the game. That was both fixed in AC2, the cities got their own style for the most part, loved the carnival in Venice for example.

The fidelity holds up decently, it’s more just the graphic direction. Everything’s so grey.

It’s the first entry in the series, so it’s fair that the gameplay isn’t as polished as in the later games. I do agree with the appearance. It has a very muted color palette which I dislike as much as I dislike the piss filter in movies/games that take place in Latin America.

I’ve seen rumors that they’re doing a remake of AC1 which might fix your graphics issues.
as much as I hope that is true… I’m not a fan of the new souls like combat and the new engine driving the Parkour. It feels off somehow. So hopefully I get proven wrong and they change it up.
