Disagree. AC 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations are good and I love them, genuinely, but AC1 is undeniably the start of the series to me. For one, the modern storyline was genuinely half of the pull for me, I was so invested. And never have I ever felt more like an actual assassin than in AC1 I think. Every game after drifter further and further away from assassin and into generic action.

To me it always felt like AC2 is the true start of the franchise. The first game was cool in many ways, but overall felt almost more like a tech demo or proof-of-concept. I like the more serious vibe of it, but it gets very repetitive.

On the contrary I feel like there was a purity to AC1. AC2 leaned too hard in the direction of busywork and history tourism, AC1 had an almost meditative focus on the assassinations.
I understand why the second game was more popular and has shaped the (imo poor) direction of the franchise. But the first game has always been my favourite.

I’m noticing a bit of that. A lot of the missions feel like “Go here, pickpocket a guy, beat up another guy, kill a guy” with very little plot exposition. It’s still cool but the story is fed between the cracks it feels like
