Usenet retention can be an issue, I think some providers have a cut off of over 15 years though.
Admittedly its more popular now so likely to have more modern stuff yes.

HereIAm@lemmy.world 1 day agoCorrect me if I’m wrong, but is Usenet more used for newer releases and items are hosted by individuals, not p2p? Since I stopped using Spotify I’m constantly backfilling older music, and with TV shows and movies I’m usually 5+ years behind the release. It was just something I read, the content on Usenet is usually revolved around newer things

Usenet is hosted by companies dedicated to it, not individuals. So generally you can use an encrypted connection and max out your bandwidth.
It’s not just new stuff either.
