Even setting aside the high flammability, hydrogen is a bitch to store and transport.
You really just need something lighter than Nitrogen to get an object airborne.
Consider Ammonia or Methane instead.

Could just produce it in-situ, maybe? Lots of chemical reactions produce hydrogen gas as a byproduct.
