Not really. It’s just that only a lunatic fringe in the US calls it the Gulf of America. They can also call the country the Uber Stupendous Amazingistan, if nobody else ro-ro with that, it’s as good as nonexistent.
Point being, while there is no legitimate authority, usage is what makes it official.

Given how many places here in Europe have had several names throughout history depending on who occupied the territory at the time, the standard seems to be “me and this army”.

I mean there’s a merit to translating names that still keep the original meaning, as with Mexico City/Ciudad de Mexico.
The better question is why is it not called Tenochtitlan.
