The carbon in petrochemicals came out of the ground, and releasing it into the atmosphere via combustion changes the overall amounts and proportions of gasses in the atmosphere.

To be honest, I’ve never looked into how industrial charcoal is produced. It’s possible some kilns are gas fired. I don’t know.
When it’s done in the traditional manner, the energy comes from the wood itself. You ignite it, cook off the volatiles, then starve it of oxygen.
