The UK has been infected with service charges but it’s extremely common to either a) have it removed from the bill, as there is no obligation to pay it, or b) forego the tip because of it.

It is so engrained into society that suggested tips on the receipt are welcomed, because then you don’t need to do the math

In 2019, I went to Shanghai to attend my cousin’s wedding and one thing he told me before going is that I should not tip under any circumstance. It’s regarded as an insult to the restaurant because you insinuate that they are unable to pay their employees well enough.
