Do you think using a friend to help with providing some services I need for my business is a bad idea? On the plus side, we worked together for many years (and still friends after both leaving) and I know they’re good at what they do. I don’t have to go searching for a provider either, which is a drainer. On the possible negative side, I don’t want any feedback / input on their work to impact our friendship - I would probably be more reluctant to give this compared to using someone I don’t know personally. I don’t think the negative part will come to light but you never know.

Your friendship survived work last last time. Don’t see I shouldn’t now.

also, how defensive are they?
some people take discussions of work as attacks and put downs
others take it as feedback and an opportunity to learn, to do a better job, get the job done right and co-operation

Especially since it’s design stuff, if you can give more detail on the brief and what’s expected that should help remove any tension.
If you’re both just trying to achieve a goal then the feedback is fine. If you’re trying to figure things out or leave too much up to them, the feedback could then feel like you’re critiquing their skills as a designer.
