And they are probably aware of that. The suffering is the point.
That’s what happens when you put people in leadership positions who earnestly believe that empathy is a “fundamental weakness’. Ya know, ignoring that empathy is precisely what’s made us successful as a species in the first place.
More suffering -> more crime and more unrest.
More crime and more unrest -> more they can justify future power grabs, increased surveillance, and use of military power on domestic soil.
