Interesting. I was somewhat keen on the switch, but never placed it particularly high up on my list because the selection of games were pretty limited, and it was a bit pricey for me
Iâm sure the 2nd one will still get a fair few sales and have a bit of appeal, but Iâd see it as mostly appealing to the millennial crowd who grew up with OG Nintendo games and really just want to play them in a portable form factor that isnât a phone. I donât think it would have a lot of appeal to younger people who might have just gotten or been interested in the OG switch because it was the best dedicated portable gaming system you could get at the time
Honestly, a decently large amount of the people I know in the age range of 30-45 either have a switch and love it, or really want one. I donât know many people in their 20s or below who thinks much of it at all. Just my 2c

Also of note Switch 2 wonât really have any competition.
I donât consider the steam deck or anything else coming out to actually catch the attention of everyday people because theyâre too obscure to people who arenât deep into their tech and also pricing is a lot higher.
Ask a kid about Switch and theyâll know what it is and most likely have played one. They wouldnât have any knowledge of any other portable console.

You might be surprised with at least the steam deck. Now you can buy them through steam theyâre advertised right on the store homepage.
The alternatives might be a bit more obscure but anyone already playing games through steam should know about the deck

I would be surprised as the data does point to a massive gap between the sales of the 2 units.
As of September 30, 2024 146.04 million Nintendo Switch units have been sold.
The number of sales for the steam deck seem to be a little bit vague, itâs probably at 3 million or maybe 4?
I also believe it was only released here in Australia officially 2 months ago and only available in key countries.
The average person isnât really looking at a Steam Deck if you ask me, itâs more of a niche product.
But they can both exist and cater to their respective audiences and demographics.
