If you’re doing activities outdoors: Always bring an extra bottle of water. That is to say, bring a bottle to drink, and then another for when you get thirstier than expected. This season is relatively cool, but you really don’t want to be caught unprepared. Also: Arizona has a law requiring businesses to serve water for free if you ask. Don’t let anyone bullshit you and ask for money.
Keep an eye on the weather reports, and do not hike down washes, ravines, or narrow canyons if there’s a rain storm anywhere nearby. Heavy rainfall several miles away can turn a sunny, dry ravine into a raging torrent that can kill. If you see a road that’s currently flowing with water, don’t try to cross it, even in a big car. You don’t know how deep it really is, and even just a few cms of fast water is enough to sweep a person off their feet and drown them. It doesn’t take much more to get a car stuck.
If you’re going to Northern Arizona, bring warm clothes. People can be caught unprepared when they leave Phoenix for a day trip and it’s 60⁰F, but when they get to Flagstaff 2h later it’s snowing.
If you see a Jumping Cholla: Image
Don’t get too close. Their spines are longer than they look because they get so thin as to be nearly invisible.

- Comment on Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" has ended its theatrical run after just 4 weeks with only $12.5 million, against its $120 million budget. 3 weeks ago:
It’s similar only in that it’s about a “Great man” remaking a society in collapse.
Really none of the themes are there. Nor is there any journey of discovery to understand who Caesar is, like you get in Atlas Shurgged where other characters learn who John Galt is.
Galt is “Self interest and belief in my vision will make society better”. Caesar is “McGuffin building materials and belief in my vision will make society better”. For all its flaws, one is at least a political statement, while the other is milquetoast hopium.

This movie is so hard to talk about, because the question is: “What is it even about?”
I like movies with abstract themes and strange storytelling, but this was just incomprehensible. Its plot revolves around the machinations of rich men to control the future of their city “New Rome”, but the plot is kinda meaningless. There’s never any real threat to Caesar’s goal. Just plot events that could be obstacles but then are immediately resolved/neutered. Ok, fine! Surely then it’s an art-house piece with a deep message? I was waiting for everything to add up in the finale, but it just ends up with Caesar delivering a speech filled with platitudes so bland that I thought it was a joke. Then the credits rolled and the 2 of the other 5 people in the theater with me started laughing.

Anime Sci-Fi classics that you might already have seen:
- Akira (1988)
- Ghost in the Shell (1995)
If you’re ok with abstract cinema:
- Tetsuo the Iron Man (1989)
Visual appeal:
- Metropolis (2001)
Not Sci-Fi, but one of my favorite films of all time:
- Cure (1997)

Surely this could be good, right?
If celebrities need to be accessible to their biggest fans, maybe it would induce them to leave the birdsite? And if this is as big a migration as the article suggests, it has the potential to snowball in network effects, giving other influential users one less reason to feel chained to a dumpster fire.

I’ve been browsing your blog as part of a plan to build my own node using some ESP32s I have lying around from a prior project.
I was wondering if you know of any recommendations for a 900MHz transceiver module that I could use for US node?
- Comment on How will this community survive its Eternal September? 2 months ago:
I’m not sure if amateur radio is due for an external September. Most people don’t see the point, since they have phones and Internet.
I guess we could see HF airwaves fill up with frivolities? But all the new operators would open up opportunities for cool new digital modes to make the most of shared resources. I’d love if there were enough people in my area to start a broadband Hamnet.
- Comment on No thanks. I'm good. 2 months ago:
A story I heard was that it was the poor indigenous farmers who were forced to cultivate coffee for the Dutch. They weren’t allowed any of the beans they grew, but were able to collect it from the dung of civets that prowled around near the plantation. Of course, once the colonizers learned that it tasted “good”, it was commoditized too.
Might be apocryphal.

Seriously, what a shit article.
Summarizing reviews with “some critics said…” “reviews mentioned …”, and explaining that fans of the game like gore.
I learned absolutely nothing that I didn’t already know from cultural osmosis, and even though I didn’t read through to the end I still feel like I wasted my time.
- Comment on Why do radio stations all seem to go on commercial at the same time? 2 months ago:
- Study free materials available online.
- Take free practice tests.
- Look for license exams in your area, or take an online one. Exam fees in my experience have been ~$25 and go towards whichever club is proctoring.
- Pay the $35 FCC licensing fee and get your callsign.
Theoretically, that’s all you need. It’s possible to use certain internet linked amateur transmitters for no cost as long as you have a valid callsign. However, I promise it’s a lot more fun with a real transceiver. You can buy a bare minimum, highly hackable handheld VHF/UHF transceiver for as little as $20.
Or you can slowly give your soul to the moneypit of HF equipment…

- Comment on Is investing in real estate immoral if you use it to buy your first home? 3 months ago:
In the USA, property taxes are how most towns and cities get the majority of their funding. 200€/year would be crazy low.
In my medium cost of living town (USA), taxes come out to 4, sometimes 5 figures a year. Plus as the area becomes more desirable, property taxes (based on the sale price of a home) go up for recent buyers.

For me, at least, all the “Morrowind-like” comparisons set me up for disappointment. I’d say that it has visual aspects inspired by Morrowind.
Maybe I didn’t play it enough. I got 2h in and then hit a bug where I kept falling through the environment, and then my save got corrupted. It didn’t feel Morrowindy enough for me to want to start over.

I don’t actually like those big recliners they have in movie theaters. They’re too plush to be comfortable (if that makes sense) and the droning whine of the electric motor is annoying when someone adjusts their seat during a screening.
- Comment on anon has movie night 4 months ago:
If the greentext is to be believed, I think OP made a second mistake: insulting the audience instead of the bad movie. In fact, the only evidence that this is a “bad” movie night is OP’s own opinion. Maybe this was supposed to be a generic popcorn movie night for the average filmgoer, in which case OP’s comments might have been interpreted as rude by the folks who enjoyed F&F.

My area is pretty good, but I went to a hamfest a few towns over and heard some awful stuff being spoken like the most casual thing in the world.
On mastodon, I see people organizing a few leftist nets out there. Might be worth checking for d-star or fusion nets that would let you dial in over internet.

They would not even need to open source the servers. Just making the server available for users to run (even under a proprietary license) would be enough.
