- Comment on They just had to one up the TikTok ban 16 hours ago:
World has had some controversy and a lot of .world users have a very “Reddit” worldview - which kind of makes sense since many of them are Reddit refugees.
As a result there are some instances that have defederated with .world, and some call into question the moderation model used.
196 didn’t even ask their users though; they were just like “ok we’re gonna move the community and no one is allowed the old one” which is an arbitrary decision that goes against the design of the fediverse.
If you don’t like how a community is treated on an instance and the admins won’t work with you, you’re free to go create your own community elsewhere, with blackjack and hookers. But, I don’t think it’s fair that you can just pull the ladder up behind you and slam the door. Shame on the 196 mods and on the blahaj admins both for allowing this situation, the worst possible outcome.
- Comment on After the catastrophe of Concord Sony is reportedly cancelling other projects including a God of War live service game 2 days ago:
They probably started it at a time when analysis suggested it was what people wanted more of, and then during the probably what; 4 or 5 years it took to develop, interest waned?
I don’t think it was weird that they started on this; it was pretty weird that they didn’t pivot or cancel earlier.

- Comment on Alec Baldwin's Rust Case Is Over, Prosecutor Drops Manslaughter Appeal 3 weeks ago:
It was on a movie set where it is to be reasonably expected that the armorer will clear weapons to be safe on set and that actors aren’t expected to be firearms experts so that they are able to perform with them.
It should also be expected that said armorers do their job as expected and NOT shoot real ammo out of prop guns. And if they do, they’re expected to properly clear them; even though they never should in the first place.
But yeah, this was totally about Alec Baldwin the elite bourgeois flexing his real ultimate power of wealth and crushing the matter-nothing proletariat, the people have lost once again because he was not held accountable for someone else’s actions.
I’m all for eating the rich but let’s not just make shit up, that makes us look ridiculous.

- Comment on Plumbing Subreddit that locks anyone that is "new", even after everyone has commented 3 weeks ago:
You do, they just don’t see much activity and therefore people assume they do not exist.
Discoverability is becoming a big issue for niche communities within Lemmy.
I almost wish that the community model was more like a tag, and there was just one single “plumbing” for all instances, for example. I realize though that this idea raises hell for moderation/what do you do when someone takes over a name for hateful purposes/where does the sidebar exist/etc.
Having separate comms on separate instances just results in the biggest instance hosting all the communities; at what point is that any better than Reddit?
- Comment on Plumbing Subreddit that locks anyone that is "new", even after everyone has commented 3 weeks ago:
There’s a way to change that

I looked at ONE light switch because I couldn’t find exactly the type in other stores (single-gang dual 2-way multipole) and now they will NOT stop emailing me about electrical equipment and supplies as if i was a contractor

I’m American and part of the fun of British humor is the lingo I don’t understand and have to go seek out!
I would have known “bog chain” but just because people might not know it doesn’t mean cut it! Fucking stupid decision by Netflix.

- Comment on why are fax machines still used by medical systems? 2 months ago:
That is patently false. Encrypted email and patient ports are absolutely allowed under regulation.
What you have here is a practice that has probably been in operation since the 80s or before, and they refuse to change their ways.

- Comment on Analogue’s 4K Nintendo 64 launches next year for $249 2 months ago:
FPGS would be considered “hardware emulation” but a lot of people don’t like that term, and then emulation should be a term limited to software.
Like, there aren’t real N64 chips in there. The hardware IS emulating an N64 -‘it’s just not doing so in a way that’s compatible with software emulation at all.
- Comment on What is a passkey, in practice? Is it a file? A token? Can I keep it in an USB drive? How can I save it in case of device loss? 2 months ago:
Passkeys are basically client certs for website logins.
Server stores a public key, encrypts a challenge on login attempt. Client browser uses private key to decrypt challenge (and sign it maybe?) and respond to web server to authenticate.
Hackers can’t get a shared secret (like a password or password hash) by hacking the website’s database becaus the public key is all they store; useless without the private key.
Not foolproof, but much harder to exploit than passwords - which many people re-use across multiple sites.
