Yes, I believe this is the first scam/spam-to-private-mail bot that reached such a wide audience. On lemmy at least.
Been going on for quite a while now, but it’s difficult to block permanently since there are so many instances where they can make an account. Until they’ve used up all the nicole+instance domain names lol.

Yup. Since fedia.io was federating with ani.social for awhile you’ve got a “local copy” of ani.social’s communities on fedia.io from back when it federated.
So when you post on those communities it’s all happening only on fedia.io and you see posts/comments on that community from other fedia.io users. But, for example, I can’t see what fedia.io local copy of anime@ani.social looks like from my instance, because my “local copy” is still federating with the actual instance anime community is hosted on (i see new posts and my posts/comments get sent first to ani.social’s original community and federates to rest of instances from there).

He was a freelancing PCB designer but pretty much got consistent jobs and in the end longer contracts from this platform.

I know a guy from Ukraine who was doing this on fiverr and was making quite a lot of money from US clients. He was doing PCB design though so don’t know how well fiverr works for other fields.

Rich and having good/powerful connections allows you to do anything in this world. We like to think this has changed but it hasn’t in the big picture.
The only thing these people need to fear is losing significant amount of money or too many important connections…

I prefer to say “stretch the truth”. This is more common than a lot of people realize.
There is always someone getting paid more who doesn’t exactly qualify - or worse, doesn’t even try anymore.
As many people have said in the thread, it’s all about who you know. “Networking” is more important than skills in many industries.
