Bobby, if these kids could understand volcanic geology, they’d be very upset right now.
- Comment on How many floors are under an apartment on the second floor? (No basement) 3 weeks ago:
But I’m the US way, you’re only one floor from the ground on the first floor. 0 isn’t a floor, it’s literally the ground we put the first floor on.

Wish this was me. I’ve been making the same dumb decisions since I was 20 and now I’m in my late 30s

Mine is entirely alt right “comedians” and helldivers 2. I’m pretty sure the algorithm thinks I wholeheartedly endorse the SuperEarth ideology.

Man, where do you live where unemployment is nearly a year at 80% of your salary? When I was unemployed here in Washington, it was six months and more like 50% of my salary. And from what I understand, Washington is a lot more generous than most states.

Lots of good reasons why someone might end up in debt. I got divorced and laid off. Dog needed $2k surgery to not have a terrible quality of life. Got a terrible staph infection on my chest after losing health insurance. This all happened in a four month period. I moved to a cheaper apartment, cut off any subscription aside from internet, which I need for two of my four jobs, got a cheaper phone plan, and mostly ate rice and beans every day. Still, it’s taken a year just to get back to zero.

Yeah the plot turns in Prometheus are about as dumb as running in the same direction something is falling instead of just stepping to the left or right.
- Comment on Philosophy 1 month ago:
According to philsurvey, 80% of academic philosophers in the anglophone world are. About ten percent are agnostic and ten percent are theists.

As somebody that spent three years trying to get a job as a tenure track philosophy professor, this is very accurate.

No. I don’t do any of this stuff and it has never occurred to me to do it.

It was a slur the entire time millennials were growing up. It hasn’t not been a slur since…the 70s?

- Comment on Why do some websites have a "Continue Reading" button? 3 months ago:
Yeah this shit annoys the hell out of me with certain websites where I’m trying to ctrl-f information. It hasn’t loaded the whole page until I scroll down, so my search ends up being worthless.

Okay but it is definitely a garbage movie. The plot is terrible. Come on, guys.

This movie made me wonder if Japanese people do not care when birds shit on them. So much bird shit in this movie, and nobody batted an eye.
- Comment on US Question. Will the people that have to wait until 70 to get Social Security ever get what they paid in to it back out before they die since men's life expectancy is only 77 now? 5 months ago:
I think they’re assuming retirement age will be raised by the time they retire.

No average year of IRA return is guaranteed to beat the 6.8% interest or more that a lot of us are paying on student loans debt.

They don’t make cheddar and jack cheese in France? I know it’s not traditional there but surely somebody makes it, right? I’ve never been so I don’t know.

This sounds wild but you don’t live near Seattle, do you? We just had a minor earthquake and the next morning all my smoke detectors went hog wild. Apparently that can happen?

I got a lot of this advice trying to get into academia. From what I found, knowing someone somewhere is actively detrimental to getting a job. Not only will you not get a job because of your connections, people will avoid giving you a job because hiring from a network speaks ill of the academic rigor of the institution. Whether it’s real or not, the image is maximal meritocracy, and that means the traditional advice from the corporate world is useless.
- Comment on there is Indeed a problem 7 months ago:
Dude I got a PhD and tried to get a tenure track job. I’m from a family of dirt farmers and had no advice on how to break into academia. Your words couldn’t be more true.
- Comment on What does cigarette smoking do for people? 7 months ago:
Nicotine is an awesome drug. Increases your focus and provides a mild euphoric effect. Of course it’s not good for you, and if you’ve got to do it, it’s better to get it in some other way than to smoke cigarettes though.

It’s basically useless when you’ve tried your network and it’s all dead ends. This advice is basically the “don’t be ugly” of the employment world.

I have applied to over 500 jobs on LinkedIn. I got one interview. I swear sometimes that it’s all just a hamster wheel and nobody ever gets a job through it.
- Comment on Have you ever felt a imaginary switch click that changed the trajectory of your life? 7 months ago:
Warms my heart to see somebody concerned, though I imagine I’ll have to figure it out myself. I’m in Seattle and used to work in management/IT consulting. I’ve got a weird background though, cause I’ve got a PhD in philosophy and spent the ten years before that teaching a bunch of logic. It’s a pretty tough combination to find a job with.
