The average lifespan for wild passerine birds is probably a lot longer than 3 yrs.
In general, birds live a weirdly long time. Banding studies show us song birds that have lived up to 15yrs or so. Assuming they make it to adulthood, a cardinal can probably expect to live 6-8 yrs but that is a wild guess since it’s almost impossible for us to really measure that.
Anyway, that’s enough zoology time, back to the memes!
- Comment on The RTS genre will never be mainstream unless you change it until it's 'no longer the kind of RTS that I want to play,' says Crate Entertainment CEO 7 months ago:
RTS did go mainstream and it indeed turned into games very different from old school SC et al.
Plants vs zombies and LoL are the descendants of the genre and are or at least were, HUGE. Tower defense and moba are the two evolutionary paths that RTS took.
Tower defense is super mainstream, but moba, while huge isn’t really mainstream in my opinion. But one things for sure, they don’t have much in common with SC except the lineage.

Your body is essentially an oxidation reaction that it ponders its place in the universe.
A slowly burning fire that pays taxes.

Really? Like you have honestly stayed in a job for ten years without any increase in comp?
Wages have skyrocketed over the last 3 years and you are still willing to take what you were offered in 2014?
My instinct is that this is total bullshit but if it is not, please, I’m begging you, go get a new job and pass on anything that isn’t at least 60% more than your current wage.

I have no diagnosed neurodivergence and I’m looking at that list with surprise. Like, you know how fucking hard I’m working to pretend I can do that stuff?
A person who can do all that shit looks like a superhero to me. No talent… fuck… if that list had telekinesis on it’d feel about the same to me.

I spent the week leading up to the eclipse looking at weather forecasts trying to give us the best shot of clear skies. When we got in the car Monday we still had to drive around a bit to get out from under the clouds. Ended up on some dirt road in NW OH in the middle of nowhere under a small patch of blue sky

The way that they were able to use their toolset to make space, actually super cool. Especially when you start to poke at it a little and see how the clock actually ticks. BUT, it doesn’t really serve fun. Like I bet there is a morrowind technical dev somewhere who shit their pants when they saw it but for the rest of us, it ends up feeling bland.
So there was some interesting innovation, but it did not serve gameplay. Strange award to give that game. The strongest thing they do is level design and all the bespoke levels are really good. That is a compliment I can give starfield without any reservation.
- Comment on Beyond Biology: Scientists Uncover a Universal “Missing Law of Evolution” 1 year ago:
I will read this paper. But, based on this article, I’m not impressed. The notion of a natural structure “working well” smacks of the sort of teleological bullshit people who do not understand biological evolution say to fill in gaps in understanding.
Biological systems evolve because they self replicate. That provides a mechanism form change, and a metric of success which feeds back positively into itself. Systems that do not self replicate might evolve, but according to what mechanism? The article seems to insist there is a universal drive, which is to say… some teleological bullshit.
- Comment on Microsoft expected to finally buy Activision Blizzard next week 1 year ago:
How many games game out this year? Thousands. There is absolutely zero possibility that MS or anyone else is anywhere near holding monopoly status on the production of entertainment software. Even if they bought EVERYTHING new creators would enter the space the very next day.
- Comment on Microsoft expected to finally buy Activision Blizzard next week 1 year ago:
Trust = one or more independent organizations making secret agreements to mutual benefit.
Mergers: not a trust.
Monopoly = a single organization that controls an overwhelming amount of the market.
Microsoft buying a publisher that put out 2 games in 2023: not a monopoly.
- Comment on Microsoft expected to finally buy Activision Blizzard next week 1 year ago:
The competition! lol! Activision is going to put out 2 games this year. Whatever will we play now that these 2 games are owned by a platform holder?
You are correct though that there are a million cool ass games you can play right now and put your money in the pockets of people who make THINGS instead of people who make value for shareholders.
