I think FVV is a great player and dude, but man I remember his games as a Raptors when he’d drive a lot, never pass, and rarely make a bucket. I don’t miss those
- Comment on [Game Thread] 22 DEC 2024 35 minutes ago:
I didn’t expect this depleted Raptors squad (no IQ, RJ, or Poeltl) to be so frisky and competitive against the Rockets, a much better team. Down by 1 going in the 4th quarter 💪

I think we have different styles of estimating uncertainty. But on c/NBA we’re all united by our passion for basketball :)

We won’t know for sure, but your statement can be used for owners of all kinds to evade responsibility for all kinds of shady stuff. They control decision-making and the budget though, so I’m content to include them as a responsible party here
- Comment on Silver: NBA looking into 3-point volume critiques 4 days ago:
Think the best solution is to allow more defense on the perimeter.
How is it not allowed?
I’m not too knowledgeable about Xs and Os, but I’ve heard that teams haven’t really learned how to guard the 3 line that effectively since this new offensive paradigm of basically only paint points and a ton of 3s took over (defensive strategy is lagging behind).

NBA owners are cheap as fuck. They pretend to gift a PS5 to a fan so that it looks like they’re doing it in the arena and on TV and then they take it back later once the cameras are turned off. gtfo

Between the 2 Canadians on the Thunder, SGA gets so much of the spotlight, but I love Lu Dort!
Game’s getting physical!

MLB (baseball) did that until pretty recently!

It’s funny that they dim the lights in the arena to make all the empty seats less visible on TV

You got some good ideas. I think expansion of last year’s Steph versus Sabrina 3-point contest is on the table. Don’t quote me on the this, but I heard Caitlin Clark and Klay Thompson mentioned as well, and a 2 men, 2 women format. That’d be dope! I also want to see more of that LED court. Just for fun, I want to see a game with temporary ‘powerup spots’ and maybe some are moving lol, for example 4 points for a shot within the arc, or a 5-point shot close to half-court (in moderation though to prevent too many heaves)
- Comment on [Game Thread] 17 DEC 2024 - Bucks vs Thunder - NBA Cup Final 5 days ago:
Yeah, I thought OKC matched up well against the Bucks and was surprised they were only 4.5 favourites on the point spread. I also thought the stakes were higher for the Bucks than Thunder in terms of how they’re viewed after this game - win or lose - given the differing directions of the 2 teams you mentioned (reaching prime vs getting old).
Khris Middleton Out NBA Cup Final This is really unfortunate. I hope Khris is okay but I also feel like this waters down the game - how much it represents the Bucks’ strength, the competitiveness and entertainment of the game perhaps. I hope Giannis gets 40 and the Thunder win in a close game XD!
- Comment on Khris Middleton Out NBA Cup Final 5 days ago:
Which is it lol?
Khris Middleton is out for the NBA Cup Championship game due to illness. Doc Rivers said they needed rest him because they have a back-to-back coming up after leaving Vegas
- Comment on NBA announces revamped All-Star tournament 5 days ago:
Imo there’s nothing more boring than watching players ‘play’ an ASG who don’t want to be in the ASG. You have a point about the intent of the ASG, but I’d rather watch exciting games with less marquee names than snoozefests with marquee names. I will probably root for the rising star team. And hopefully they win their first game so they’re in the final, potentially improving 2/3 games. It’ll be interesting what/if incentivizes Jokic or Kawhi, as examples, to exert themselves. With 3 games, the games are probably shorter, so that would help. FIBA’s 10-minute quarters even feel punchier than 12 minutes
- Comment on NBA announces revamped All-Star tournament 5 days ago:
While I generally agree, I think making one all-star team a rising stars team will make things more interesting because I don’t think players voted as all-stars will want to lose to the rising stars team (ego)

I’m old enough to remember Lemmy’s inaugural NBA Cup 🤭. The Pacers feel like they’re on a descent from peaking during last year’s tourney. If whoever wins tonight fizzles out in the first round of the playoffs, there’s going to be talk of an NBA Cup jinx lol

3 musings
I feel like the NBA did a lot more to showcase the In-Season Tournament last year before they got the Emirates sponsorship. Maybe it’s a second season bias. But the innovation this year seems marginal, from similar courts to last year’s to LL Cool J’s “Mama said knock you out” returning as the official tournament song. Last year, I thought the Cool J track was that year’s song. Now it seems like the official NBA Cup song in perpetuity lol. Our ears have a 2-day break
Scottie Barnes is having an injury prone season that could cost him about $50 million under the new 65-game-minimum rule for seasonal awards. His injuries will disqualify him from All-NBA under that rule - which is a stretch but not a wild take this year - thus taking about $50 million off his rookie max deal. Tyrese Haliburton is another story. Both examples expose the influence of all-NBA awards on NBA contracts as a flawed system.
David Thorpe on the TrueHoop podcast this week mentioned how the knockout stage of the In-season tournament is a chance for the NBA oligarchy to see how more exciting the sport can be if they reduce the number of games, so that each game matters more - a reference to the possibility of shortening the NBA season. It’s true, but I don’t think those greedy bastards will ever do it ;P

- Comment on Sources: Raptors' Barnes expected to miss weeks 1 week ago:
I feel bad for Scottie. 2nd injury this season. It will have a pro-tank effect on the Raptors’ competitiveness. Their next 3 games are Heat, Bulls, Nets - all winnable, before they return to 3 against top tier teams. Let’s see how they do

Rockets (good), 76ers (bad), and Pacers (bad) may be the biggest surprises so far this season
- Comment on [Game Threads] 05 DEC 2024 2 weeks ago:
Yeah, that was no contest. Given how bad the East is; Scottie, RJ, and Jak all playing well; and Ochai and the rookies all playing well - I feel like we’re a play-in team by talent. I think we’re going to need to actively tank if we want a top pick. It’s clear that we could handicap this team by moving Jak, but then we’d have a big hole to fill afterwards. I didn’t get starting Bruno over Mogbo, but Darko realized pretty quick Mogbo was giving them better minutes

Yes but I feel there’s a pretty good case already that he can’t reliably play a full season - too injury prone
