You’re missing the point, and I can’t tell if it’s willfull or incidental, but everyone is saying it has become something we only do a few times a year, as opposed to regularly, because of the expense.

I get you’re being over the top to make a point, but it seems a bit ridiculous to compare overpriced popcorn to a first class plane ticket and staying at an expensive hotel. We’re talking about experiences that people used to indulge in on a whim, or which were reasonably affordable for average folks. That is not the case with the examples you provided, and those kind of purchases are large even for some people of means.

You’re not wrong, but you’re also ignoring the fact that the whole point of a movie theater is to have an “experience” and the snacks are part of it. Sure, you don’t have to get it, yes your strategy can be done and will work, and I have a long and storied history of stopping by the candy aisle in the grocery store before noisily making my way to my seat and enjoying my discount goodies. But buying a ticket to a theater is a matter of spectacle and experience, and that exact experience is becoming rapidly unaffordable even when you just buy the tickets alone anymore.

FWIW I feel the same way about people putting A1 on their steak.

I said goodbye to theaters years ago; the cost of attendance is unjustifiable anymore.

Gotta add Black Sheep and Tommy Boy to the list. Peak Farley/Spade era.

I’m you but still on the dating apps. So glad I got out of my marriage to that insane excuse for a woman, but man is the current dating landscape an absolute shitshow.

She abused me for 15+ years. I feel no sympathy for her.

I’m happy to say I’m in a much better place, more stable with the brightest outlook I’ve had on life in years. Getting divorced from her and her bad choices has sent my life in an upward trajectory. My only lament is that she is a pitiful mother to our son, who deserves so much more than she can offer him.

Equal parts narcissism, bad company, deteriorating mental health and poor decisions. I had a whole thing typed up, but I’ve aired this shitshow elsewhere before. The short version is she has been a problem at every job she ever held, so she opened her own bakery and proceeded to drive it into the ground within about six months. She hung out with some shady people who did shady things, and got wrapped up in her own wants and desires. She eventually walked own (after hitting me on camera) when I wouldn’t give her my car so she could go “work” (i.e. swing by her crack dealer’s place). She stayed away voluntarily for about a week or two before I found out about the crack usage; after that I told her she couldn’t come back and filed a police report for the domestic battery in order to protect myself and our son from her. Took me a while to admit to myself that I was stuck in an abusive relationship for 15+ years.

Or sometimes they already have a good life (house, kid, spouse, dogs, x2 cars and stable support) and instead they decide to burn it all down in favor of a two-week crack bender. She drained our bank account, caught a DV charge and we are now divorced, thank fuck.

This is also a form of marketing yourself to the correct audience.

- Comment on Would you work for a corporation that you oppose ideologically, if the pay is good? 1 year ago:
I’ve done this. I was working for scraps out of college as a community reporter when an ostensibly conservative online news organization offered me an 80% pay raise and the opportunity to do most of my work from home. I was young, recently married and wanted to start a family, and we needed the money. The bigger salary was nice, but over the course of two years I spiraled into a deep depression and began to loath myself and what I did. It was so bad I began looking for a way out after the first six months. Eventually I got out (took a pay cut to do so) but am now in a much better place personally and professionally. I would never do anything like that ever again.
