- Comment on Before modern-day authoritarian regimes, did people living under abosolute monarchies talk criticize the monarchs? Or did they just stay silent in fear of persecution? 1 week ago:
They didn’t go into details, just made sure I fear talking about it again. Losing my parents was incentive enough. And I’ve never heard them talk about the regime ever again.
A few months later, in December of ‘89, as more and more cities around the country were revolting, my parents suddenly took me to my grandparents’ in the countryside, and they went back to town. I didn’t know why. A few days later I saw on TV the “we’re free” news, with footage from around the country and the new “National Salvation Front” political party taking over. I didn’t understand much then, but I remember being proud that they finally “arrested the guy” (they executed him and his wife by firing squad, on Christmas day).

I grew up in a rough communist regime. I was really young when I overheard my parents talking about how the “supreme leader” was bad and things were starting to boil the next town over. There was nothing on TV or radio. Innocent me just asked my dad like, if he’s that bad, why don’t they just arrest the guy? They didn’t realize I actually understood what they were talking about. I can still remember, to this day, 36 years later, how the soul left my parents’ body in an instant, and we had a looong conversation about how I should never say anything like that ever again. People disappear when they talk like that, and “you don’t want your mum and dad to go away, do you”?
A few months later there was a nation wide uprising, people died, the regime fell, and they actually arrested the guy.

- Comment on If we replace most plastic with a non plastic alternative and would that really be better? 3 months ago:
Not exactly answering your dilemma, but I was watching a cooking channel yesterday (Sorted), and they were talking about seaweed - it’s wild (heh). You can use it to make straws, bags, packaging and all sorts of stuff that’s foodsafe and biodegradable. And apparently, even if we replaced all the plastic used for that kind of thing with seaweed, we’d barely make a dent in the ocean’s seaweed supply - we’d use less than 1% of it.

This is like the Apple Business website, which only works in Safari, according to them. Used the User-Agent Switcher plugin, and the website/dashboard works just fine on Firefox in Linux.

I sometimes reply with “maybe”, just give myself time to think about it, or maybe I’m busy at the moment. One time my daughter was very happy with this response, and I asked why, as I didn’t say “yes”. She replied that “maybe is always yes for you, dad”. Damn. :)

You would also need the wall-mount to properly test it. It’s a toilet paper holder, just in case people were wondering.

it’s a farm cat, we live in the countryside.

Bringing some home too, as gifts, because we humans can’t hunt. Last time it was still alive, and my cat was proudly watching me trying to catch the little critter from a counter. I could hear him: you can do it, human! you’re welcome!
Most of the time they are dead, though, heads or spines missing. When I hear my wife screaming at 5am I know there’s another partial mouse in front of the main door.
- Comment on HELP! How do I help educate my son about his body when I know nothing about boys?? 7 months ago:
I never received any kind of talk from my parents. Also, in my home country, during the communist era and even after, sex ed in schools was taboo. Crazy thing too, since it had (and still has) one of the highest teen pregnancy numbers in Europe.
Anyway, I did not want that with my kids. Luckily where we live now there is a strong sex ed program in schools, but also at home, we were always open. We talk about sex casually, we reiterate “always ask for consent” and “no means no”, and my son even ratted out one of his school buddies who’s a Tate fan. He knew that what the guy was saying was wrong, so they don’t hang out anymore.
Also, sexuality. One of my daughters came out to us over dinner, so casually, “dad, I think I’m gay”. I just said “cool” and gave an awkward fist bump.
Just be open, casual, don’t make things weird.
- Comment on Can I lose a beer belly working out one day a week? 7 months ago:
i did have some blood tests back in december. everything was within parameters for someone my age & gender.
i’ll try the calories / carbs counting. based on how much i eat, i should be able to add it all up at the end of the day. i remember 10-15 years ago i dropped the sugar from my coffee and also stopped eating bread for a few weeks, and i dropped a few kg. i do eat veggies, it’s not just protein with rice. my kids love a salad with olive oil and lemon juice, and my stir fries and curries also have plenty of them. but noted!
thanks a lot for the tips!

thanks! i commute once or twice per week to the office, and that’s some train, some walking. i average 5k steps per day, but with 10k when I go to the office. yesterday i did just under 1k.
i did check in with a specialist regarding my sleeping issues. it’s… complicated, but i’m working on it, part medication, part cpap machine :)

sorry for hijacking, i am also interested in the subject, commenting here to hopefully get some info. i’m 174cm / 84kg. i wear medium clothes, but my beer muscle shows up, it’s quite big. even through a sweater.
i don’t exercise (i work in it, from home mostly), but also, i barely eat. today i had 3 coffees (no sugar, little milk), some leftover stir fry (veggies, chicken, mie noodles) and an apple, and that’s common. i don’t eat sweets or junk food.
i cook almost every day, usually curries & rice, stir fry, pizza/pasta, soups and stews, but i rarely eat myself. i switch daily between chicken/pork/seafood/tofu/legumes for protein, but there’s always rice or pasta or bread.
i drink a couple beers in a week (on average), i drink very little water throughout the day, maybe half a liter.
i sleep very little too, about 5h on average (less during the week, more on weekends).
where should i start? what’s the most blatant issue on my list? i know, all, but… what would be the first?

- Comment on Why do some laws exist if everyone is expected to just break them? 8 months ago:
They are enforced, of course, but there are large sections of highway with no speed limit.
- Comment on Why do some laws exist if everyone is expected to just break them? 8 months ago:
If it only was that easy. I don’t know if 5km/h over the limit is “speeding”, she just doesn’t pay attention, and we’ve been having this discussion for years… I am trying to convince/teach her how to use the speed limiter, but she always forgets to enable that. And the cameras are not static around here. There are a couple static ones, but the vast majority are mobile. They look like small black boxes on wheels, like a power distribution point. Until you see the flash light :)

Well, tell that to my local traffic authorities. My wife basically has a subscription with them, we get home a monthly invoice for 30€ because she was driving 55-60 km/h in a 50 zone… Complete with a picture of her face and the car’s license plate :)

People here gave really thorough descriptions, but what I remember is that their pamphlets (awake?) have a really cool graphical style, and that mesmerized me as a kid. Not the content itself, but the shadows, the gradients, etc. I went into graphic design because of :) still an atheist though.
