The best part is they stock the Australian flag all year round. They’re just not stocking all the extra Australia day shit because people aren’t buying them. They chose to stock hot cross buns in January instead because people buy them.

It’s difficult to tell whether he’s capitalising on existing grievances or creating them. It’s trumpian as fuck either way.

- Comment on We have had guns for 200 years but mass shootings only became common in the last 30. So what changed? 1 year ago:
I actually don’t blame you because I would feel the same way if I lived in America. I hate guns, but would feel the need to have a gun if I lived there. It seems like such a cycle of mutually assured destruction that just keeps escalating out of control.
- Comment on We have had guns for 200 years but mass shootings only became common in the last 30. So what changed? 1 year ago:
Australian here. We had one really bad mass shooting and then our government (who was also one of the most conservative governments in the last 50 years) banned guns. Haven’t had one since. Guns just aren’t a thing here and we kind of think you’re a weird country for being so obsessed with guns. I also personally think it’s weird that guns are like the symbol of your freedom, yet you don’t have universal healthcare. Universal healthcare offers so much more freedom than guns do.
In saying that a lot of countries have guns and don’t have the same problem with mass shootings. What the US has is a cultural problem in terms of your relationship with guns and violence. Unfortunately, doing a mass shooting is now a normalised way to deal with your problems. Not all of you, obviously. But enough of you that it’s gotten completely out of control. In Australia I don’t think it was just the banning of guns that has reduced mass shootings. We have a culture in Australia of ‘don’t be a dickhead’. I think when we had our mass shooting we all collectively just said yeah nah mass shootings are next level dickhead behaviour.

It is but gender inequality is still endemic across society. Put this way, I’d rather be a woman in Iceland than say Afghanistan, but I’d still rather be a man in every single country.
- Comment on What are the connotations of Joe Rogan? 1 year ago:
Politics aside I would say the connotation here is that this person isn’t very intelligent. I don’t mean that as a statement on their intelligence but instead that Joe Rogan falls into the category of anti-intellectual, low bar entertainment. I’d consider Joe Rogan to be the equivalent of a tabloid paper but for people who listen to podcasts.

- Comment on Could we improve men’s mental health? 1 year ago:
I’m a woman but due to my interests in traditionally masculine activities and general disinterest in conventional gendered behaviours, I hang around a lot of men. Most of my close friends have been men. From my experience, if men want to improve their mental health then they need to develop a better relationship with vulnerability and the shame they’ve been conditioned to feel around that.
Mental health stigma exists for everyone and as a society we need to fuck this right off. Mental health challenges are part of the human experience in the same way physical illnesses are and we need to support people accordingly. I’ve noticed that a lot of men tend to have issues with expressing their feelings out of fear of being vulnerable. The outdated myth that men are less emotional really doesn’t help this situation either. This can also create barriers for men in seeking mental health support, both formal and informal.
It needs to more okay for men to be vulnerable. All people are vulnerable and it doesn’t make you weak. All people need support at some point in their lives. Emotions are really hard and it’s better to recognise and acknowledge them than it is to push them down. Expressing vulnerability and overcoming difficult feelings shows bravery and strength.

It’s all about how you word it. For instance I’d call this out of the box problem solving or lateral thinking. ADHD can often give you hyperfocus on whatever you’re interested in which I would describe as passionate and creative engagement with projects.
I’m in the opposite end from in the tech industry (people industry) so I could be wrong here. But I do have ADHD and have learnt a thing or two about how to frame certain traits.
- Comment on Does the government keep capitalist interests on the top ? 1 year ago:
It’s hard to summarise in a comment but I’ll give it a go. I should also note that this is just my understanding and opinion so I encourage you to seek out more information and formulate your own views where possible.
Neo classical economics is the technical term I guess but you might be more familiar with a similar concept known as neoliberalism. As it’s associated with Reagan and Thatcher it’s also referred to as Reaganomics or Thatcherism. At the heart of neoliberal ideology is free market fundamentalism or the idea that unregulated, profit-motivated, markets are the best way to distribute resources. Doesn’t matter what these resources are (health, food, housing, iPhones etc), neoliberalism tends to see things as products and not human rights. If you’re in America this will sound pretty normal to you, but for us non-americans who have things like universal healthcare, it’s a strange way to distribute a human right.
Another key part is this idea that when rich people get richer it benefits society because wealth trickles down (you may be familiar with the term ‘trickle-down economics’). Therefore economies work best when those with the most capital (the rich) are left alone to do what they do best and government’s role is essentially to facilitate this. There’s a lot more to it than this and encompasses a range of issues.
Why do I think it’s a cult? Because we have all the data now to show that trickle down economics is not a thing, that equality is getting worse, that people are suffering because their human rights are not being met. And yet we are still using this approach. Sure, this is a situation where the powerful don’t want to give up power. But I also think the rich and their servants (governments) do actually on some level believe in the ideology. It’s very much a church of capitalism. The pandemic rely illustrated this on such a visceral level.

Hahahaha umm yeah it does. This is kind of why a lot of people have some issues with the whole capitalism thing. It’s not good for anyone but capitalists.
