Usually, my own thoughts are the only ones that matter to me. The exception is the rare occasion when I actually create a post or comment asking a question. That’s when I want to know about what you think. Otherwise, buzz off.
- Comment on How do I report report abuse as a moderator? 1 year ago:
They’ll get around to it. What they need to get around to doing is telling people this. So many mods don’t know and a lot of their problems would be solved if they were informed. I totally figured it out by accident. Wherever and whenever, I just let other mods know this, because their problem might be because of a block list.
- Comment on How do I report report abuse as a moderator? 1 year ago:
Not just lack of them. The system gives you mod privileges, but as soon as you become a mod, all the things you did as a free and happy user sort of cave in. For example, super cool how users can block instances. If you’re a mod, if you block an instance, you can’t see posts in the community you moderate from instances you blocked, I’m guessing. I’m guessing, but it makes perfect sense. If you block a user and you’re a mod, you can’t see posts from that user in the community you moderate. I figured this out and right now, am I free as a moderator to block people? Nope. If I want to do my job (which I totally volunteered for, by the way) I have to just let people harass me. For me, it’s no big, because whatever (as I shake my blonde pony tail back and forth). But, you know, they need some programmers to make it so you can be a good moderator and block people who harass you and still see their posts and comments in the community you moderate. Until then, you have to bend over and take it. It’s not so bad, though. I mean, it’s been a long time since my old block list came back to haunt my ass. However, it’s something that is missing that needs to be addressed. My recommendation (because I’ve been burnt as a mod) is to just never block anything. It’s sad. I mean, mods do the job because they want to, but they can’t ever be a user that can block shit when they’re being a user and not modding.
- Comment on Dark mode by default? 1 year ago:
That’s weird. Something in your settings is not jiving with the rest.
- Comment on Dark mode by default? 1 year ago:
So weird, but actually changing your desktop theme to “light mode” forces it to stick to “light mode.” If that doesn’t work, look for the setting in your web browser. For me, it was all about changing the setting for my desktop theme. When we’re all dead, I suppose you can set each web site to dark or light mode, at whim?
- Comment on How do you delete a community you have created? 1 year ago:
In the top right corner of the sidebar of your community you should see a trash can icon. Click on that. If you created the community you can delete it. I did this two or three months ago. No admin powers required.
- Comment on An admin deleted all my uploads and I have no clue why 1 year ago:
It looks like a lot of mistakes were made in your case. I saw your posts asking about dialogue and such. I’m surprised no one has reached out to you because, speaking for myself, when I remove something and give an explanation in the modlog and I’m asked more questions by message, I always reply and explain myself. I’m sure someone will interact with you if you send an admin a message. I looked at the log and it looks like a script or other automated action is to blame. The admin actually caught the issue and tried to restore your posts. It also looks like it was a “suspected spam” type of deletion that was corrected. I understand your irritation. I wouldn’t want to be in your situation because you took lots of time to add content to a community you care about. However, it looks like one of those things we call an “honest mistake” that somebody on the admin team tried to take back. I haven’t seen a case like this, it’s very eye-catching to me, because it’s so obviously a mistake. To help make you feel better, I’ll tell you a little story. 2 years ago I spent about 2000 bucks on a Lenovo Legion 5 gaming laptop. I took it to a computer repair guy to clean the dust out of it on the inside and replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. He used a forced air compressor to clean the fans and didn’t see that a loose wire on his work table was inadvertently in contact with one of the cooling fans. Snap! Broke the fan. He apologized personally to me (like, you know, face to face) and promised me he would replace the component he broke free of charge, plus do the whole entire job in front of me so I could see what he was doing. He fulfilled his promise. I must admit, it was quite boring to sit through watching him take out all the screws, etc. But he kept his word and did the right thing. The people that run lemmy world seem to me to be a lot more honest than dishonest and also very willing to admit they screwed up if they screwed up, just like my computer repair guy. I’m very certain that if you pm an admin the very admin responsible for the error will write to you personally. You were just unlucky. Somebody wrote a bad script or was tired and wasn’t thinking clearly. I think it says a lot about how someone attempted to restore your posts. Also, if the images attached to them can’t be recovered, is it too much work on your part to delete the empty restored posts and just make new posts with the images? Maybe in between posts, you can count to ten so it doesn’t look like spam or something? I think that would help make your community look nicer and more appealing to subscribers who like comic book art.
- Comment on community linuxmemes seems to be unmoderated 1 year ago:
Good, I’m glad you wrote them and I hope you help them out with moderating the community. I might be able to see a more updated version of the modlog because I’m a moderator? Also, when I use Firefox to navigate to lemmy world on my phone I often have to reload the page because the browser loads what I had previously viewed. So, I think there could be something weird going on with web browser caches. Anyway, federation sometimes creates hiccups, also. What you can see from one instance might not be visible from another.
- Comment on community linuxmemes seems to be unmoderated 1 year ago:
Hey there! The moderator of that community is actually modding. Last activity as a mod, according to the mod log was 17 hours ago. From what I can see, the mod removed the racist post you’ve linked to and banned the account that posted it. It looks like the offending user didn’t like being banned and logged into an alternative account and reposted the same meme just 34 minutes ago. It also looks like the moderator, just a month ago, asked for help modding the community and didn’t get too many responses. I’m sure they would love getting some help with modding from you. But, to say they are not doing their job is inaccurate. Unfortunately, there are some users who just insist on re-posting content that was removed and they get irritated when they’re banned, so they do it again from another account. Dealing with these people is like a game of whack-a-mole.
- Comment on Valve: don’t expect a faster Steam Deck ‘in the next couple of years’ 1 year ago:
Thanks for writing out how your experience is. It’s how I imagined it. I would need to have more battery life to make it worth it to me to buy it. For example, a long trip without any way to plug it in. I definitely wouldn’t expect it to run AAA titles.
- Comment on Can mods of communities on lemmy.world make sticky posts 1 year ago:
Yeah, it sucks, in other words. Like I just said.
- Comment on Can mods of communities on lemmy.world make sticky posts 1 year ago:
You have to create the pos,t then, after it is created, navigate to the post you just made, then you have options to sticky it. You can’t make a post and at the same time sticky it. Source: A hard working moderator that actually does this shit twice a week. Also, I’m voting myself first in my class for doing and knowing about this bullshit because I do it twice a week to: 1) have a weekly discussion topic 2) poll my community about what they’d like to discuss next week. I must confess it’s a bitch. Would be really nice if they could make a thingy for moderators to create the post and make it stick all in one gesture. Just because, you know, when you moderate on here enthusiastically for the first time and you’re not a power mod asshole from Reddit (like me) like, it would actually encourage more people to moderate on this instance. I got no help over here because it’s 1980s tech superimposed on the internet.

Yeah. When I was using windows I just refused to install adobe and used Firefox as my default pdf viewer. It took me some time to figure it out. Adobe doesn’t care that they invented the pdf last Millenium. They just want in on the Microsoft bucks. Those two must have some boardroom deal.

- Comment on Best games to improve language fluency 1 year ago:
I think a trading card game, where you have to be vigilant about everything printed on the cards, would be helpful. There are plenty of options. Slay the Spire, Monster Train, etc. there are some that mix rpg play with card play. Source: me, a language teacher that uses card games in class.

This already happens with other file types. For example, if you click something from your widgets, it is a file type that forces Edge to be opened. Other browsers can’t open it. Microsoft is trying to make Edge its new Internet Explorer. I mean, just click on the Weather widget. See what app opens. Try to make another browser open it by default. You can’t on Windows 11. Smells like anti-trust courtroom action, take three.
- Comment on Why do dentists have such a bad reputation compared to other kinds of doctors? 1 year ago:
I can say why I’m not exactly fond of my dentist: I’m missing a molar I don’t need, my dentist keeps on trying to get me to spend over a thousand euros on an implant he can put in. Every visit he tries to sell me this useless implant. Every visit I say, “no thank you.” This has been going on for five years. It gets old. Other than that, he’s great at his job so I don’t know. I don’t consider him to be of the “bad rep” variety. A failed salesperson? Perhaps.
- Comment on Did lemmy.world really defederate from the pirate instance? Totally unacceptable if so 1 year ago:
If you have the means to do so, you should do it. I saw an instance today that is like that. It’s called radiation.party, I think. I would do things this way if I could. I just don’t have the equipment at home at the moment and my ISP won’t allow me to have a static IP. All you need is a computer you don’t need to use for other things plus a static IP.
- Comment on Did lemmy.world really defederate from the pirate instance? Totally unacceptable if so 1 year ago:
Actually, that could be the reason why sometimes the user finds things unacceptable, because some instance owners treat their instance like their “own little walled garden.” It’s a real pain to shop for an instance when you don’t want a walled garden but rather an open medium through which to access content you wish to see. I see some instance owner decisions as reasonable (like staying away from misinformation and fake news) and I see others as a little bit unreasonable. I try to stay out of walled gardens. I like to roam free and make decisions for myself because I’m a smart boy, I know what I want and how I want it.

The best solution is to just create an account on the instance that hosts the community, MATIES! ARRRRR!
- Comment on Please fix Rule 1. 1 year ago:
The question of legality on Lemmy is something that has to evolve and be discussed because of federation. Stuff on one instance gets replicated on others in other parts of the world. What factors should be the determining ones? The place where the instance is hosted? All the places where the content is replicated? Who is liable? The owner of the originating instance or all the instances that replicate illegal content? If this wasn’t free and open, but rather a huge corporation, the fediverse would have a legal team to decide already.

Well, I guess this helps me decide if I want to play the game. I really don’t enjoy games with “romance” plots for reasons I can’t explain. IRL I’m a romantic fool but I don’t like it in my games. Can anyone elaborate on the OP? Is it just nudity (I don’t care about nudity) or is it really focused on romantic side plots?

PS2 games are super hard to emulate. That’s the shan-gree-lah of emulation. If the product mentioned can emulate PS2 games, I guess it can emulate just about anything.
