- Comment on The NeverEnding Story 40th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray 2 months ago:
I was existentially afraid to watch this movie as a kid, because I was convinced it would never end. My kid-brain was sure that if I ever started watching it, I would never be able to stop.
- Comment on Please allow VPNs 2 months ago:
I’m also using paid Proton VPN and have issues posting comments every day. If I stick to non-American servers things generally work, but if my random connection picks anywhere in the US, my comments won’t post until I switch and switch and switch and find a random server that works. I’ve rage-deleted quite a few comments after they refuse to post. It’s really pretty frustrating, but I won’t stop using my VPN to make Lemmy work better.
- Comment on Bill! BILL! Bill! BILL! 2 months ago:
Same. I’m so glad we somehow had cable on these things, because my class watched it happen live, right after wheeling this cart in to watch a history documentary. Lots of other teachers turned it off because tons of kids in my school had parents working in those buildings, but my teacher knew it was an important thing for us to see.
- Comment on Want the legal right to ignore your boss outside working hours? Learn from the French | Alexander Hurst 2 months ago:
I guess I’m really lucky to have this right. Every day after my 8 hours are done, I have my slack notifications automatically muted and I fully shut down my work laptop. My boss knows if she really needs me, she’ll have to call my cell, and she has never once done that. There’s nothing quite like a little bit of mutual respect.
- Comment on Xbox Unveils Four New Accessibility Offerings 2 months ago:
I don’t have an Xbox, but I’m thrilled any time companies add good customizable accessibility options. It’s good for folks who really need it, but also usually good for those of us who just like to customize everything as much as possible. Everybody wins.
- Comment on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is coming to last-gen consoles next month 3 months ago:
I had the same experience with pretty much the same hardware. I played right after launch and had one or two crashes and a few stutters here and there, but otherwise I found it to be a surprisingly stable game, especially considering the wildly negative press it was getting at the time.
- Comment on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is coming to last-gen consoles next month 3 months ago:
I played it on my RTX 3070 shortly after launch, and while there were certainly some stutters here and there and the very occasional crash, for the most part it actually ran fine. I think the poor quality of the PC port has been seriously overblown. Granted I don’t care much about sustaining insanely high frame rates, but the game itself was amazing on its own, and even better having played and enjoyed the first one. Well worth any remaining technical glitches.

Hell yeah! Keep these releases coming.
- Comment on What are good options for fans (tower, standing, etc.) 3 months ago:
Thirding this. I went for two of their pricey all-metal tabletop fans. Definitely a luxury purchase, but they’re built like tanks with sleek retro styling. These things will last the rest of my life.
They’re surprisingly quiet on low and medium, and sound pretty typical on high.

- Comment on What would cause a person to speak in different accents randomly? 4 months ago:
It sounds like she has some personality issues, but as someone who has lived in a bunch of different countries, I can attest that sometimes I forget how to pronounce certain words, and something weird can come out every once in a while. It’s rare, but some close friends and family have noticed and rightfully made fun of me for it. I really wouldn’t have noticed unless they pointed it out.
And don’t get me started on spelling…living in the UK for a while totally ruined my confidence with English spelling and turns of phrase. I also still say ‘cheers’ in lieu of ‘thanks’ more than I’d like to admit, and I’ve been back in the US for almost 8 years…
So yeah, your coworker sounds like a trip, but language is so goddamn confusing it’s totally possible that she has no idea how she sounds. Could also just be looking for attention, as others have suggested.

This is great! I’ve been wanting a 4K Blu-ray of this for a while. We watched this movie when we studied critical theory in high school. My teacher used it to explain existentialism. Has been a favorite ever since.
- Comment on is this the right way to establish boundaries with my nosy coworkers at the hospital? 4 months ago:
My whole team and I work remotely, so it’s not the exact same situation as you, but I made a concerted effort from day one to set social boundaries with my colleagues. First week on the job my manager found out I’m single and offered to set me up with people. I acted very weird about it, purposefully exaggerating how uncomfortable the offer made me, and she got the hint. We have a very friendly and cordial working relationship, but she no longer pries into my personal life unless I volunteer information. Been happily working under her for four years now.
That work/life separation quickly filtered down to the rest of my colleagues, to the point where now they act a little weird when a company call starts to get personal. Mission accomplished.
I think the key thing is that you’ll never get through to people if they can’t read social queues. Sounds like your workplace cliques are filled with those types of oblivious folks, so you might just need to be completely explicit about keeping things fully professional. I’m lucky that my manager is emotionally intelligent, but that’s pretty rare these days.
Good luck!!

Single-shaming is real. It’s particularly nasty because it can often come from family, friends, and strangers alike. And the media does it constantly.
Most governments are set up to support and value married folks with tax breaks and incentives, fuck everybody else.
Guess who’s less likely to be able to buy even a small house because you need at least two huge incomes these days to even qualify? That’s right, single people.
I’ve been single for about a decade, and I’m overall pretty happy. Every once in a while I do find myself in a self-inflicted shame spiral, but I always tell myself “Bertram, this is your life, live it however you want to live it.”
That said, I’m not opposed to finding a partner, somehow, but I’ve built a nice little life for myself so it’s just not a priority. Especially because I wouldn’t even know where to start…
- Comment on How should news sites be funded? 5 months ago:
This is the only answer I’m okay with. Keeping government away from it would be a challenge, but an easier challenge to handle than our current cesspool of for-profit media companies.
Same with elections, they should be fully funded by taxpayers, and not a single cent of private money should enter the equation. Depending on the office and the size of its constituency, every candidate gets the exact same amount. You accept a dollar from a corp? You’re automatically disqualified. Imagine how much harder candidates would have to work for their votes.

I want to know who goes around giving a single downvote to entirely personal and uncontroversial comments. Happens to almost every single one of my comments. I’d rather have five or ten downvotes than just one. I dunno, I know I shouldn’t let it bother me, but it does.

“And so, after the Great Factory Atrocity committed against the workers by the Billionaire Grey Shirt Army, all Grey Shirts we’re forced to flee to their luxury orbitals. Thus the curse ‘may he launch himself into orbit and never come back’ entered the common vernacular, often accompanied by the ceremonial breaking of an orbital landing beacon, many of which had been found in a large cache of Grey Shirt supplies buried on Oahu.”

- Comment on According to the Federal Reserve Americans owe over $1.6 trillion in student loan debt, with the average borrower owing $37,667 6 months ago:
I took out one of my most egregious private student loans in the early 2000s for about $30,000. The interest rate is variable, so it goes up regularly. I’ve been paying the minimum (now $475, my largest bill after rent) on time every month since I graduated, and my balance is currently about $32,000. Oh and that’s just one of my many student loans.
There is literally no way out, I’m completely trapped.
Fortunately most of my other loans are federal, so they’re slightly less shitty, though not by much. At least those will eventually be forgiven once I’m too old to care.

- Comment on Florida outdoor workers rally against law banning local regulations against extreme heat [Rocío Magnani | Apr 29 2024 | LatinTimes] 6 months ago:
All the double negatives make the headline a challenge to parse, but they are against the legislation because it would make it illegal for local authorities to implement basic safeguards for people who work outside. They want the safeguards.
The legislation, known as House Bill 433, forbids local authorities from mandating that employers provide their employees with, for example, water breaks or advance notice of their work hours.

- Comment on Meta wants to be the Microsoft of headsets 6 months ago:
I feel you, and part of the reason we don’t have access to cheaper and better options is because of Meta’s monopolistic instinct. They bought oculus, which had been actively innovating, instead of competing with them and strengthening the market by developing their own product. It’s not like they didn’t have the money.
I don’t fault anyone for buying their stuff if it’s cool, my stand is purely a stubborn one at this point. I just won’t touch Meta with a ten foot pole.
- Comment on Meta wants to be the Microsoft of headsets 6 months ago:
For someone as apparently intelligent as Mark, it’s amazing how stupid he is.
It doesn’t matter what you do or say, Mark, I will never buy something produced by or associated with Meta. Don’t care how groundbreaking or revolutionary it might be.
I see you, Mark. I’ve watched how you operate for the last 20 years, Mark. I’ll never give you a cent.

This is really helpful, thanks.
- Comment on If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts? 7 months ago:
Because it’s in everyone’s best interest that people with overt bias are dismissed. In high profile cases it’s standard practice for both sides to do pretty intensive research on individual prospective jurors (they get a list), and that often includes scouring the web for their social media accounts. If they find something you posted, and you didn’t disclose your account when asked, you could be in trouble.
I don’t think it’s usually standard to ask specifically about social media accounts, at least in normal mundane cases, but in a crazy case like this, it can say a lot about a person’s ability to be impartial.
- Comment on If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts? 7 months ago:
I was just about to ask this same question in a different thread. I’m in a similar situation, in that Lemmy is the only social media I use (Reddit before the API crap), but I’ve never used my real name. I’d happily own all my comments, but the point of an anonymous account is that I don’t have to. I guess when you’re under oath it doesn’t matter, you have to truthfully answer the question that’s asked.
- Comment on can you help me formulate an answer to a colleague who is not my boss but feels entitled to tell me how I have to work? 7 months ago:
Yeah this is how I’d handle it, simple and to the point. As a bonus I might add “I’ll let you know if I need a hand” which takes the impetus away from her so she knows her ideas are unwanted, but stays professional and polite.

That tracks. My last two enterprise laptops had USB-C powered docks. The first one had problems since the first time I plugged in that ridiculous double plug for the dock. My current one is basically new and is already an unstable mess.
