- Comment on Why Jeff Bezos wants Amazon employees to ‘wake up every morning terrified’ 14 hours ago:
“And so, after the Great Factory Atrocity committed against the workers by the Billionaire Grey Shirt Army, all Grey Shirts we’re forced to flee to their luxury orbitals. Thus the curse ‘may he launch himself into orbit and never come back’ entered the common vernacular, often accompanied by the ceremonial breaking of an orbital landing beacon, many of which had been found in a large cache of Grey Shirt supplies buried on Oahu.”

- Comment on According to the Federal Reserve Americans owe over $1.6 trillion in student loan debt, with the average borrower owing $37,667 3 days ago:
I took out one of my most egregious private student loans in the early 2000s for about $30,000. The interest rate is variable, so it goes up regularly. I’ve been paying the minimum (now $475, my largest bill after rent) on time every month since I graduated, and my balance is currently about $32,000. Oh and that’s just one of my many student loans.
There is literally no way out, I’m completely trapped.
Fortunately most of my other loans are federal, so they’re slightly less shitty, though not by much. At least those will eventually be forgiven once I’m too old to care.

- Comment on Florida outdoor workers rally against law banning local regulations against extreme heat [Rocío Magnani | Apr 29 2024 | LatinTimes] 2 weeks ago:
All the double negatives make the headline a challenge to parse, but they are against the legislation because it would make it illegal for local authorities to implement basic safeguards for people who work outside. They want the safeguards.
The legislation, known as House Bill 433, forbids local authorities from mandating that employers provide their employees with, for example, water breaks or advance notice of their work hours.

That’s ArcGIS Desktop. Recently deprecated software (depending on who you ask) that is incredibly powerful, but equally infuriating and awful. Has been supplanted by ArcGIS Pro, which is also powerful and slightly less infuriating and awful, but still very much so.

- Comment on Meta wants to be the Microsoft of headsets 3 weeks ago:
I feel you, and part of the reason we don’t have access to cheaper and better options is because of Meta’s monopolistic instinct. They bought oculus, which had been actively innovating, instead of competing with them and strengthening the market by developing their own product. It’s not like they didn’t have the money.
I don’t fault anyone for buying their stuff if it’s cool, my stand is purely a stubborn one at this point. I just won’t touch Meta with a ten foot pole.
- Comment on Meta wants to be the Microsoft of headsets 3 weeks ago:
For someone as apparently intelligent as Mark, it’s amazing how stupid he is.
It doesn’t matter what you do or say, Mark, I will never buy something produced by or associated with Meta. Don’t care how groundbreaking or revolutionary it might be.
I see you, Mark. I’ve watched how you operate for the last 20 years, Mark. I’ll never give you a cent.
- Comment on If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts? 4 weeks ago:
This is really helpful, thanks.
- Comment on If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts? 4 weeks ago:
Because it’s in everyone’s best interest that people with overt bias are dismissed. In high profile cases it’s standard practice for both sides to do pretty intensive research on individual prospective jurors (they get a list), and that often includes scouring the web for their social media accounts. If they find something you posted, and you didn’t disclose your account when asked, you could be in trouble.
I don’t think it’s usually standard to ask specifically about social media accounts, at least in normal mundane cases, but in a crazy case like this, it can say a lot about a person’s ability to be impartial.
- Comment on If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts? 4 weeks ago:
I was just about to ask this same question in a different thread. I’m in a similar situation, in that Lemmy is the only social media I use (Reddit before the API crap), but I’ve never used my real name. I’d happily own all my comments, but the point of an anonymous account is that I don’t have to. I guess when you’re under oath it doesn’t matter, you have to truthfully answer the question that’s asked.
- Comment on can you help me formulate an answer to a colleague who is not my boss but feels entitled to tell me how I have to work? 4 weeks ago:
Yeah this is how I’d handle it, simple and to the point. As a bonus I might add “I’ll let you know if I need a hand” which takes the impetus away from her so she knows her ideas are unwanted, but stays professional and polite.
- Comment on Dell tells remote workers that they won’t be eligible for promotion unless they go hybrid 1 month ago:
That tracks. My last two enterprise laptops had USB-C powered docks. The first one had problems since the first time I plugged in that ridiculous double plug for the dock. My current one is basically new and is already an unstable mess.

Meanwhile, their computers suck ass (I’m an involuntary enterprise user), so maybe they should get their priorities straight?

- Comment on The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion 2 months ago:
I’m deep into Immortals of Aveum. I don’t know what all the hate is about, I’m having an awesome time with it. The combat is tight and satisfying, the writing is sharp and witty, and the plot is refreshingly original.
It runs like shit on my high-end gaming PC, so that sucks, but it hasn’t detracted from the insanely fun gameplay and great story.
- Comment on Disney to take $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games, work with Fortnite maker on new content 3 months ago:
Can one take a stake in a company? Or do they buy a stake in a company by purchasing shares? Why can’t we just use the words that are meant for the thing we’re describing?
Taking a stake implies that they just yoink grab it and it’s theirs. Buying a stake means spending money to own a share. Maybe it’s a silly technicality, but words matter goddamnit.
- Comment on Jon Stewart’s coming back to The Daily Show, but only on Mondays 3 months ago:
I’m honestly surprised by this, but I love me some Jon Stewart. He’s a uniquely talented voice that has been noticeably missing from the discourse the last few years. I didn’t think we’d ever get him back in this capacity.
Maybe this causes some introspection at Apple? Nah never mind, they only care about their trillions.
- Comment on ‘Top Gun 3’ in the Works at Paramount 3 months ago:
I posted this 1990 quote from Cruise in a similar thread, but it’s relevant here too:
“I want the kids to know that’s not the way war is. That’s why I didn’t go on and make ‘Top Gun II’ and ‘III’ and ‘IV’ and ‘V.’ That would have been irresponsible.”
- Comment on Top Gun 3 takes flight as Tom Cruise plans a ton more movies 3 months ago:
This is a quote from Cruise after the release of the first Top Gun: “I want the kids to know that’s not the way war is. That’s why I didn’t go on and make ‘Top Gun II’ and ‘III’ and ‘IV’ and ‘V.’ That would have been irresponsible.”
So, he’s also a liar.
- Comment on Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection Part I To be Shot in Rome and Mexico 5 months ago:
Yeah, I got that from the Economist/Yougov survey.
20% of people under 30 strongly agree or tend to agree that the Holocaust it is a myth.
I have no idea what to do with this shit either. The most concerning thing to me is that lots of younger folks have the impressive long-term thinking to understand that our collective futures are fucked if we don’t get the climate under control, but seem to be incapable of learning lessons from history. Nazis = bad and Holocaust = it happened, doesn’t seem too hard to internalize. The camps are still there for fuck’s sake. I realize I’m painting with a broad brush, but I’m not sure how else to explain these numbers.
- Comment on Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection Part I To be Shot in Rome and Mexico 5 months ago:
Now’s his time to shine I guess, since the world has collectively decided that antisemitism isn’t what we thought it was, and apparently Jews aren’t allowed to define it for ourselves without the help of evangelical death cultists.
I’m a Jew who values the lives of Palestinians as equally as I value the lives of Israelis, and I will never give a cent to anything Mel Gibson is a part of.
You may think none of that is related to an old Hollywood filmmaker making movies again, but according to a new poll, one in five young people don’t believe the holocaust happened. Let that sink in for a sec. Millions of people were systematically murdered less than 100 years ago, and one in five young people are like “nah, I didn’t see it, so it didn’t happen.” Anyone who tries to tell you that this bigot making movies doesn’t matter, it does. Movies and the people who make them have significant influence on the culture.
- Comment on The Curse review: Emma Stone comes up trumps again in this brilliantly unsettling new television comedy 7 months ago:
I’m aware of trump cards in card games. I’d just never heard “comes up trumps” as a turn of phrase. Made no sense to me in the context of a tv show.

- Comment on Having trouble deciding what game to play next . which one of these games should i try 7 months ago:
I’ll second this. The gameplay is super tight and intuitive, and easy to play in bite-sized chunks. The story is more thoughtful and interesting than it has any right to be. I was really shocked how much I enjoyed this game, it completely took me by surprise. Only downside imo is that the actual storyline is short, like just a few hours. Pretty good replay value though.

- Comment on It’s A Deal! WGA & AMPTP Reach Tentative Agreement To End Writers Strike 7 months ago:
Ah that’s good context, thanks. It seems like it’s mostly a positive, since it would give labor even more leverage to improve the contracts that haven’t been negotiated yet. I’m just happy that progress is being made at all. The longer this goes, the more the studios’ reputation will suffer. I hope the public says strong with their support if this deal falls through for some reason.
- Comment on It’s A Deal! WGA & AMPTP Reach Tentative Agreement To End Writers Strike 7 months ago:
This is such good news! I wonder if the incredibly effective and creative UAW strikes made them realize they were fucked if they didn’t get reasonable. The public is squarely on the side of the workers, in all the different labor actions going on right now. When this many different industries say enough is enough and take a stand, it’s hard to ignore who has the real power.
- Comment on Isn't OneDrive/Sharepiont the exact OPPOSITE of a shared drive? 7 months ago:
This is definitely true. My M365 environment has a huge number of users, and the admins have no idea what they’re doing. It’s a big mess. But that’s a red flag imo, such a massive and widely used platform should be more consistent in how they name things and how their features interact.
