- Comment on First Online Safety Act guidance for tech platforms targets grooming 1 year ago:
It’s 1000 pages apparently, and applies equally to lemmy/mastodon servers.
So unless you’re into reading lots of legal text, running a server in the UK just got a whole lot messier.
- Comment on Youtube Depends on Ads to work 1 year ago:
Ads pay miniscule amounts per view… I’ve heard it said the £12/month sub is about hundreds of times what they get from ad revenue per user. So they spam them everywhere… the more ads the better.
Which means people block the ads because they’re obnoxious, and they make nothing…

‘nudge’ sure…
‘Unless you regrow that limb we’ll cut you off and take your house’
That kind of nudge.
- Comment on How's everyone's pets doing tonight? 1 year ago:
Do it young is the biggest thing… once they’re adults it’s much harder because you’re overcoming existing fear.
You only get a few days a year but we took them outside and let them watch, showed them we weren’t scared… they both find the pretty lights fascinating, and being able to see what is making the whistles and bangs helps I think.
Sometimes need to reinforce it with the younger one, although this year he’s been mostly fine. The older one doesn’t GAF.
- Comment on How's everyone's pets doing tonight? 1 year ago:
We made a point of giving our dogs firework training when they were young and it’s paid off… they’re currently both asleep, completely uninterested in whatever the humans are up to.

- Comment on Half of Britons can’t name a Black British historical figure, survey finds 1 year ago:
And 1066. I can’t remember what actually happened then but the year is burned into my brain.
Lots of henry VIII and of course the gunpowder plot every year in November.
- Comment on Half of Britons can’t name a Black British historical figure, survey finds 1 year ago:
“She would have expected people to name figures such as Quintus Lollius Urbicus, who became governor of Roman Britain; the formerly enslaved Olaudah Equiano, who became an abolitionist and writer; Mary Seacole, who provided sustenance and care for British soldiers during the Crimean war, and the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.”
I’ve literally never heard of any of these people… schools don’t cover them - I couldn’t name any white romans either from the UK… Obviously I’ve heard of some of the emperors, but that’s it.
- Comment on JK Rowling prefers two years in jail over using correct pronouns 1 year ago:
Does she realize what a complete arsehole that makes her look? She’d rather go to jail than treat people like human beings?
- Comment on Brands face losing Royal Warrants unless they prove green credentials 1 year ago:
They lost them automatically already… they’re simply not getting them back from the new king. I’m not sure why they’re so shocked…
Any company that, as they claim, needs that approval to survive didn’t have much of a product to start with.

I made mine deliberately incompatible by disabling the fTPM but started getting the upgrade prompts recently.
- Comment on Windows: we noticed that you kept the useless search bar disabled since 2015, so we sent an update that re-enabled it without your permission 1 year ago:
They’re getting there with windows 11… first it was ‘hey you’re compatible with windows 11’ now they’ve stepped up to a full screen non-skippable screen a big ‘upgrade to windows 11’ but still with a button to stay on windows 10 hidden in the corner. It’s only a matter of time before that button disappears.
- Comment on Working week: four days is flawed way for most | Financial Times 1 year ago:
We got offered 4 day weeks… most people didn’t take it although I note a couple did as they’re not around on Fridays any more.
I have enough work to do without compressing it into less time…

- Comment on Suella Braverman reacts to photo of herself standing on dog at Tory party conference 1 year ago:
In most of the UK yes, subject to local council byelaws - eg. locally the rule is if you can’t get a wheelchair past, you get a ticket.
In London it is actually illegal.
- Comment on Up to tenth of Amazon shoppers in Great Britain ‘bribed’ by sellers to offer good review 1 year ago:
I got offered a more expensive product for free if I’d change my review. So I changed it to 1 star instead. Judging by the glowing reviews a lot of people took the offer.

Clearly not that alone, no. She’s being obtuse… A woman from Afghanistan however may well legitimately want to get out of that country & I think we should be receptive to that.

Meat Lover -> No Beef alone is 3.3 -> 1.7, or 80% of the saving you get by going vegetarian (so I was slightly misremembering on my original post).

- Comment on Good enough 1 year ago:
It’s only illegal in the UK in London (wierd exception, imo). On other places it’s down to local byelaws (our local council states that a car must allow enough space for a wheelchair to pass for example, although it’s rarely enforced).
- Comment on Vegans, vegetarians, fish-eaters and meat-eaters in the UK show discrepant environmental impacts 1 year ago:
PIty it isn’t broken down by type… I’ve seen similar research that suggests that beef accounts for a good 90% of the footprint of a meat eater. That’s important because you might be able persuade a few people to shift their diet to only vegetables but a whole lot more would be OK with just giving up beef.
