  I worked with addiction services and AA, for me, seemed quite culty. Its not explicit that “acknowledge that you have to hand your personal agency over to an imagined ‘higher power’” is one of the steps.

  They start using these in-group phrases and shit… it always felt like they were seconds away from having secret handshakes and assigning themselves ranks like “deputy high priest of “I used to drink all the time””

  this is a very real condition. my wife has a phd in experimental physics and can NOT remember which is which. if she looks at her hands she has a trick (the L your thumb and index fingers make is the correct orientation) but say “turn right!” to her and you might have well just made the muted trumped voice from the old peanuts cartoons

  you are more activated when you are anticipating observation and evaluation by the observers.

  part of your brain is processing what you look liked doing the task, and generally you do the task with more overall activation.

  long story short, you get better at very simple tasks (ie tying your shoe) and worse at complex tasks (like playing a complex piano piece on stage).
