By that logic we should all program with .bat files

Javascript doesn’t “just work”. It’s a language originally designed to glue actions to html elements and it is fundamentally broken in ways that will be never be fixed. Weird syntax, weird type coercion, horrible base types & functions, surprises galore. Even Typescript, which is basically a precompiler, is just JS with some type checking. The only reason anyone uses either is because it is ubiquitous - people have to use it.

Could be worse, could be programming Javascript (or Typescript).
- Comment on Anon recommends a cast iron pan 1 month ago:
I’ve heard from several sources that the iron is supposed to be good for the diet. I love my carbon steel and cast iron kitchenware. All of the studies I’ve seen show it as a superior option to PFAS cookware and will still outlast the latest ceramic options. I have a very non-stick carbon steel pan and griddle from avocado oil seasoning.
You didn’t mention that you’re oiling it after drying it. It’s recommended that you lightly oil the surface upon storage.
I think cast iron will definitely outlast ANY non-stick, no question. For non-stickiness though it’s basically on the tolerable end - put oil in it and most stuff will slide around but sometimes you don’t want too much oil so its a trade off. I think stainless steel is a great option in its own right - it’s not really non stick but it can be made tolerable with oil and can be scrubbed back to condition and thrown in the dishwasher.
I sometimes coat my cast iron pan in oil, but more often than not I don’t.

I have a cast iron pan. Pros - it’ll last forever if you look after it, it doesn’t contain PFAS and generally it is non-stick enough to not be a nuisance. Cons - heavy AF, needs to be cleaned and dried after use & not in a dishwasher. I haven’t tried to cook anything acidic in it yet but it does okay for steaks, eggs, mushrooms, sauces that I have used it for.
I still use soap and a plastic scrubber on mine and just dry it on the hob for a bit. I haven’t had to reseason it yet but I imagine it will be a pain in the ass when I do. I have seen part of the seasoning flake off but it normally self heals with more cooking.
So it’s okay overall but I think lack of PFAS and the fact that this thing will last a lifetime are the clinchers. Even if you have non-stick buy one of these and use it by default. I expect a stainless steel pan would be good too for same reasons.
- Comment on Anon buys an air fryer 7 months ago:
I’ve had multiple airfryers, not against them per se. There are some things they cook better IMO. Cocktail sausages come out well. Whole chickens too. Anything you can fit the relatively small dimensions and either lays flat on the bottom or can withstand agitation/stirring AND has good heat dispersion / circulation. Small portions work better. Generally they’re easy to clean although steel baskets and plastic fixtures on tend to be very flimsy and they don’t last more than a year or two of regular use. I even had an airfryer which had this stirring mechanism in it which supposedly negated the need to turn stuff over but often it just caused some foods to disintegrate into starchy crumbs.
As for consumer ovens, can’t say I’ve had any major issues ever with them, be they electric or gas. They’re less efficient and slower to warm which is their downside. Once they’re up and cooking I think they work fine and are obviously more versatile.
Pick the best tool for the job at hand basically. I think also, that something like an instant pot (or similar) is a better and more versatile device to buy before an airfryer.
- Comment on Anon buys an air fryer 7 months ago:
Air fryers are basically just small convection ovens. If you have an oven then an air fryer does nothing you can’t already do. That said, it does cook some things slightly faster due to the confined space. I’ve found mine will cook a chicken in just over an hour saving maybe 20 or 30 minutes on a regular oven. I guess it also saves energy / money but whether it ever pays for itself is another question.
- Comment on 'There's almost nobody left': CEO of Baldur's Gate 3 dev Swen Vincke says the D&D team he initially worked with is gone, due to Hasbro layoffs 11 months ago:
The same Hasbro that tried to make a land grab for all D&D derivative content by changing their Open Game License to grant them irrevocable, perpetual rights to it. This is not a nice company as they demonstrate time and again.
So maybe it’s time the RPG community stopped thinking Hasbro are ever going to change, mourn for what D&D has become, but move onto something else.

In the UK you do handbrake starts as a part of the driving test. They’re not useless because if you don’t know how to do it, then you’re going to roll back or cut out when you start off and that’s a fail. Hence why they’re part of the test. Typically, you apply the parking brake, release the clutch enough to “bite” and hold you in place, release the brake and continue to release the clutch as you press on the accelerator. All in a controlled fashion.
Of course, fancier cars have hill start assist and electronic parking brakes these days so I don’t know what happens if you show up for your test in one of those - they probably just do the test anyway because I’m sure people still manage to screw up.

Most of not-North-America drive around in manual vehicles. Have to wonder what the allure is of something which is kind of mundane, boring and retrograde, especially these days. If people really want to connect with a car, then buy an EV. Instant torque and responsiveness without screwing around with extra sticks and pedals or suffering the rubber banding in some automatics.

Of course it has excellent water management because otherwise they’d run out. Doesn’t mean that everyone having pools and so many golf courses is anyway defensible, or doesn’t put insane stress on the supply.
- Comment on Very few people realise how environmentally devastating this game is. 1 year ago:
Las Vegas has something like 70 golf courses wasting inordinate amounts of water. Of course most houses also have outside private swimming pools tool.

This is one of those “wut?” moments. I wouldn’t be surprised if WB just said f it and kept her in because this movie will bury the DCEU franchise so it hardly matters one way or the other.

Unless the CEO walks and takes his yes-men with him, I don’t see Unity recovering from this self-inflicted shitshow in the near term. I bet it has motivated a lot of devs to look at the viability of using Godot instead and being free of future shakedowns.

To be fair it happens here. Made a comment about far left & right being manipulated by Russian BS about Ukraine and some very tedious people started at me about how Ukraine are Nazis etc.
- Comment on PSA: the largest piracy community is blocked from lemmy.world 1 year ago:
I assume all instances have rules and how far out there you want to go is up to you. Someone says lemm.ee doesn’t block these sites but rule 2 of that site is No Illegal Content which could arguably cover piracy related groups. Doesn’t stop you just having an alt on the server hosting this stuff you want to look at however. Just be aware that if stuff is illegal and it’s illegal in the jurisdiction the server is hosted in then it’s unlikely to last long.

Most people who park like that in a stupidly big vehicle, at least park far away so they’re not stealing high frequency prime spots.
