- Comment on 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux? 1 week ago:
I keep recommending BazziteOS but Jorge Castro over at the universal Blue project has a really good point “Most people don’t install their operating systems” and that plain fact is what stops people from moving to Linux.
Valve has momentum because they are selling you a system with the OS already on it. Sell more gaming PCs with pre installed Linux on it and the support will follow. Valve’s first attempt at getting Linux based gaming hardware out there failed but that didn’t stop them and the real push is coming this time.
If you do install your OS (most people here have once or twice), try Bazzite out. I’m running it on the minisforum Bd790i with a radeon 7800xt and it works great!
- Comment on 'Mickey 17' Faces Tall Order at Box Office After $19 Million Opening Weekend 5 weeks ago:
I saw this movie this weekend. It was ok. There were a lot of missed opportunities and unexplored plot points. The film consistently stumbles just to keep the pace up. It had enough story to be a limited TV series but it was condensed in a way that made it feel rushed. With that being said I enjoyed the acting and cringed actively as I watched on in horror at what effectively is unironically already the world we live in.

- Comment on YouTube devs be like 4 months ago:
These platforms seem more vulnerable to alternatives than they ever have been before but it turns out the opposite is true. The hosting infrastructure is so expensive that it prevents competitors from even starting. Datacenters are basically a cartel and getting your foot in the door is near impossible without bouncing in on the heels of someone who’s in. Making compute storage cheaper is not the name of the game when it’s easier to profit by simply limiting access and driving the price up.
On the other hand, YouTube has never been profitable.

AAA title Published by Epic Games, doesn’t use unreal engine, mega-chad move.
I can see them in the future publishing it on steam as it has no integration into epic in any technical way. Epic will want to recoup their costs though by optimizing the release window for steam so expect it (if at all) to have a steam release when control 2 lands.

In the modern game industry, you get hit with layoffs even if you do well so it doesn’t really matter what the quality of your product is in the end… You still get laid off.

I hope Bungie realized that if they make another free to play shooter that it will cut into the profits of their other free to play shooter.
People who still play Destiny2 are like people who drink Hennessy. “When a mfka drink Hennessy all he drink is Hennessy” - Kat Williams
Maybe they can try something smaller, more original, and riskier and see if people will buy that. Shorter development time, tighter budget, minimize the scope of the first title and see what people will buy. Leverage the fact that you have all this game tech, expertise, and capital and make three smaller projects that do not compete against the core product directly and come to market quickly.

Honestly when I think about it, this is just Mac Users have been doing for years. It’s ok to have different devices that do different things.
With that being said, I know my journey with computers was me breaking a lot of stuff and installing software I shouldn’t as a child. If they want a windows PC, make them come up with the build. That’s the best way to share your hobby.

Large language models are going to replace search. Naturally concise recommendations are easier for humans to interact with than a swath of web pages. The problem that you get here is this is going to disincentive the creation of new web content outside of the walled gardens we already have. The walls are just going to get higher.
- Comment on Final Fantasy Maker Square Enix Will Aggressively Pursue a Multiplatform Strategy After Profits Tumble 11 months ago:
Just a thought, remakes like this tend to appeal to people in the PC crowd. We’ve all moved to PC for various different reasons. Better games, better prices, better hardware? Emulation and software preservation is the name of the game for a lot of people. Those people are working everyday to make things like the steam deck the dream game console they always wanted. That’s the kind of person who will go back and replay Final Fantasy 7 four or five times.

Nintendo is going to be the company that makes or breaks the legitimacy of the DMCA. If it wasn’t for the DMCA they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on as they’ve lost in court several times before.
Honestly I think they’re going to start having problems in places like Europe if Nintendo can be classified as a “gatekeeper” on their locked down hardware.

- Comment on Can an online library of classic video games ever be legal? 11 months ago:
The same reason a movie theater owner why they can’t show Pee Wee’s Big Adventure every weekend. Value is derived from exclusivity. Exercising your “rights” to a work means preventing anyone from having access to the work unless you are paid when and how you want.

Everybody who plays videogames has had this experience
Pay 70$ for a game:
- it’s digital only
- comes loaded with Micro transactions
- grinding mechanics that have a pay to skip function
- single player campaign: 13 hours
- buggy and unfinished glitches and freezes
- PC port locked at 30fps, runs Denuvo.
- gets removed from my library in a few years because “It’s too expensive to maintain and licensing reasons”

Rem4 has the energy of a movie that was made because James Cameron walked into Capcom main offices, met with the presidents, stood in front of a whiteboard and wrote “Resident Evil$” making sure the s was notably a bit red dollar sign $. Everyone applauded and then they made whatever the hell they wanted.
I and I love that about it.
