Eh that kind of catches the spirit of it, certainly something a Dutch Quirrel would say.
But yeah get the wider point.

Weird thing is, I set up a pan with fresh water and a couple of rocks to stand on on my balcony, and none of the birds used it.
These guys will sit on the balcony railing and watch me (and even my cat) for hours, and they regularly spill nuts on the floor of the balcony and go to get them at their leisure. So it’s not like they are afraid.
How do you water a bird?

Not so sure that’s a jackdaw, but the crows and magpies I’ve befriended who light on my balcony waiting for cashews have been doing this the whole heatwave in Europe. So, I think cooling is pretty good guess.
- Comment on For those who are super against to AI/LLM today. What was the catalyst how did you reach to this point? If you have the power to change our current situation what would you do. 2 weeks ago:
I’ve been playing around with chatbots since they arrived in the mid 90s. It was fun.
I tried the first iterations of the new LLMs and decided they too could be fun, but are useless and untrustworthy for real life situation whether personal or business. Definitely not worth the cost to the environment, society, or the nature and wielding of power in the world.
What cemented it was when someone wrote, paraphrasing here, that LLMs are going to be like asbestos. Initially seeming like some kind of wonder solution to all kinds of problems until we realize it creates much worse problems. And like asbestos, the abatement of LLMs will be long, slow, and costly. And will ruin a lot peoples lives in the meantime.

All crucial things to know. I’m lucky in that I know how to research supply chains and can afford juices made in Greece and France.
The heating part (that whole study was bullshit) you WILL know if it’s not right as soon as you inhale burning coil.
- Comment on How tf do people who work 8-5 M-F get any life done? 4 weeks ago:
I simply do not understand managers/supervisors/companies who do not realize that employees with a good life/work balance are more productive and less likely to leave. And be more expensive to replace.
I have three permanent work from home (but who come into the office for special occasions if they want) three that like to leave the jobs at the office when they go home so prefer to work in the office, and two who are a mix depending on what’s going on in their lives (both have young kids and bought houses recently).
My department is the envy of all the other exec managers; there is no gossip, no drama, no dissatisfaction. Like not bragging here, but seriously other departments point at mine and say to their boss “but they get to do that!”
But my gals and guys understand we have so much freedom specifically because we get our shit done and always cover for each other. And as long as that happens, my boss, the owner will continue to let me run my departments however I see fit.

Not to be bitpicky, but all of the above except IRC (and all the UNIX commentary) existed about two or three years after the WWW came into existence.
You are talking about a very short period of time, two three years at most, before the year 2000.
That said, your description of that time is spot on. This is the beginning of the so-called golden age.

[for anyone who doesn’t get it this is the most famous comment from Unidan who was a scientist but, alas, drunk a bit too much of his own koolaid. Other than that, he was a very cool commenter.]

As the others said, food. Specifically unsalted cashews. I called our (Dutch) bird rescue center and they said that’s the healthiest “human” food to give them.
I have three crow friends (and sometimes their buddies) who light on my balcony railing and wait for me to come out. One will eat it there while I’m watching; the other two fly it across the street to their stashes. All three will just sit on the railing and watch me work sometimes.
Sometimes the magpies show up, but they are super, ultra cautious around The Human. I can tell they know me though when they fly through the street. They make the happy magpie sound they make to their mates when one of them steals a cashew intended for the crows instead of being silent.
I get that this is illegal, but you do not have to give them a lot or make it obvious . One or two a day. You may not see them, but they will see and remember you as Cashew Guy/Gal/Nonbinary Pal.
Also alas, Unidan, where did you go?

Getting downvotes (and bots were here etc) but this is essentially true, if delivered a bit mean.
Don’t buy ceramic knives; they dangerous as hell and will fail catastrophically at the wrong time. And never put your cutting knives in the dishwasher, as you amended your post to say.
Good knives don’t have to be expensive, but you’ll have to so some research or buy second and learn how to sharpen them. They will burn me as a witch, but there are other wash than a whetstone that are just as effective and that do not significantly damage your blade.

Your dad is indeed quite selfish.
But I think we will start to go back to the multigenerational housing. Young folks can’t afford a house, so live with their folks, have kids, who help with the kinds …and then their folks need care as they age.
Could be a virtuous circle or a vicious one depending on your family/situation.

Gotta back him up on this point, and I think every parent will agree - from the time they are toddlers until late in high school you WILL catch every disease all the other kids at school had that week. Among most parents it’s a running joke.
Mine are grown now but still living at home and I STILL catch shit from them going around their unis.
