This is the way it looked in the instructions, didn’t realize they might be setting up orthogonal orientations.

It’s on a Raspberry Pi that’s on the network and the clock looks accurate, so I think the NTP sync is working. Thanks for calling that out though!

- Comment on Making a 1:1 Balun for Amateur Radio 1 day ago:
This has been puzzling me: The point of coax is to keep all the field inside the coax. But the way a toroid works is to interact with the field. Why doesn’t that prevent the balun from working when coax is used? From what I’ve been reading, is it that the balun is only affecting the current on the outside of the shield by design?

Thanks!
Yeah, I considered steel wool. Between the styrofoam bottom and the rock wool and the height overall I’m hoping it’s not an attractive entry. The likelihood of sparks seems very low so maybe it’s irrational but the idea of steel wool next to electrical makes me a little uneasy. I may get some coax putty to fill in around the cables when I come back for the grounding line.
- Comment on Built a bulkhead to bring antenna coax into my office 1 week ago:
The dipole has a coil of spare coax closer to the antenna feed point, which I think also serves as an RF choke.
The VHF/UHV J-pole didn’t have any extra, but agree it would’ve been nice to keep a little extra coil if I’d had the option.

- Comment on Field day is next week. What's everyone doing? 2 weeks ago:
There are a couple clubs in/near my city. I’m planning to stop by one with the family after we do some errands, hear about what folks are doing, see if my kid wants to try making a contact. Also I may see what folks have to say about antenna placement.
I’ve been wanting to do a fox hunt and some clubs have set that up at field day I think.
Are swap meets often part of field day? I’m on the lookout for an SWR meter and/or external tuner, so I may watch out for that.

What’s the lived experience of the workers there whom you trust? Do you have evidence of leaders in the organization making hard choices to do the right thing?
Very helpful, and very hard to get around if you don’t already have a connection.
Though in my experience, people will tell you a fair amount about the organization indirectly; and will often answer direct questions.

- Comment on Scientists claim to have found the "holy grail" gene for limb regrowth in a cross-species study spanning axolotls, zebrafish, and mice 1 month ago:
Axolotls are famous for their extraordinary ability to regrow entire limbs along with tails, spinal cord tissue, and parts of organs including the heart, brain, lungs, liver, and jaw.
Woah, that’s a lot of regeneration.
Mice can regenerate the tips of their digits, and humans can sometimes regrow fingertips if the nailbed remains intact after injury, allowing skin, flesh, and bone to regenerate.
TIL.
Unwritten here is how exactly they go about snipping mouse fingers and axolotl tails off. I hope there’s at least anesthetic involved.
In mice, the treatment encouraged bone regrowth in damaged digits and partially restored some regenerative abilities lost when the SP genes were absent.
So, sounds like small steps towards identifying part of the puzzle. Cool discovery, but plenty still to do before we’re regrowing mouse arms much less human arms.

- Comment on The BBC journalist who hacked AI with a hilarious hot dog hoax 3 months ago:
So for example, there was a study recently that found, when you’re looking for the best whatever it is, in something like 44 percent of cases ChatGPT is citing a blog post from a company’s own website where they listed themselves as the No. 1 best option and then 10 competitors, and ChatGPT is just spitting this out to other people.
It’s different than it used to be, right? People have been tricking search engines forever, but with a search engine it shows you the web page where the information came from. If you go to my website and it says, “I’m the world’s greatest hot dog eating journalist,” you go, “Well, maybe he’s biased,” right?
And somehow, not that many people are looking at source: AI and starting from the premise that it’s garbage at best and biased deceit most likely.
