Tesseract was an alternative frontend instances could host. Despite having configuration options for filtering or the lack thereof, Tesseract would silently both download and enforce a custom filter; this hidden filter could not be overridden by any custom configuration. The hidden filter included regex to block keywords, users, and instances, showing a generic error about anything filtered as being “incompatible with Tesseract”.
- Comment on Alternative medicine 1 week ago:
It’s purposefully worded that way to be misleading, even to native speakers. Explicitly calling something medicine or a cure means it would have to be tested and regulated. However, labeling something as being for wellness isn’t covered by that, and is just vague enough to have people think positively about it. That’s not saying that there aren’t beneficial things labeled under wellness; roughly speaking though, it’s can be used to sell whatever you want, while making people assume it’s actively good for them.
- Comment on ESA bafflingly declares private Minecraft servers 'illegal' 4 weeks ago:
It’s blatantly a bad stance from them; but it doesn’t even touch on games that use internal client/server models even when playing single-player — which includes Minecraft. If their argument were law, would I be breaking it by just playing Minecraft at all? With the way it’s worded, I would think yes.
That doesn’t even take into account that Minecraft in particular can turn a single-player client/server into a multiplayer with one button press. Would that be illegal? Maybe they’d argue not, because it’s LAN only (which is a flimsy argument as well). But with a little effort, you could open up that LAN server up to whomever you wanted.
Very obvious they didn’t think it through, they just want you to own nothing.

My wife and I play a lot of games; my wife is also not super technical — she can get her way around some problems, but not deeper ones, and never uses the terminal, — and we’ve enjoyed bazzite quite a bit with almost no issues.
I also do development, and that’s been fine as well.
- Comment on Settings you believe ANY game should have? (This is me advocating for a restart/reboot button on ALL games) 8 months ago:
Any game with a free cam should have the option to turn off 3d fly. Trying to perfectly position a camera while having to constantly turn in order to not go up or down while trying to slightly reposition has got to be one of the most annoying things.

I once worked on a project doing firmware that a lot of people have likely used (printer firmware for a big-name company). One of the more trafficked functions was something like 1500 lines of “if-elseif-elseif…” with something like 13 or 14 different cases.
It did end up getting refactored to something polymorphic and based on a configuration file to cut out any unnecessary steps, but it was like that for a while before I got there, and was like that for most of the year that I was part of the project. - Comment on How often do guys have a haircut? 10 months ago:

* Right now the game is in a weird state where the original company who owned it went backrupt, and the game is in the process of being revived by a different company. In the meantime, the already low player count got lower. On top of that, there’s two versions of the game: an old version that used Steam matchmaking (as the matchmaking server went down when the game original closed); and what had been the current patch, being accessible on a beta branch, which currently has issues making it hard to actaully play a match.
- Comment on Does the ping between your eyes and brain increase when you're tired? 1 year ago:
This doesn’t answer the question, but I think “ping” is a fine way to describe it, as most people will know what you mean. If you want a more technical word, “latency” is a generalized form of “ping”.

I’ve never been called out as AI for using them; but if I ever am, I have the strategy of knowing the alt code for them (0151). I even know the shortcut in word to insert one — pressing alt-X with your cursor at the end of “2014”. I also have a vscode macro set up that is just an emdash, just in case I’m in a situation where there’s not a way I know to insert one.
