Since it’s the new year, it should be known that 2026 will be the 10th anniversary of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, the 20th anniversary of Blu-ray, and the 30th anniversary of DVD.
Maybe there will be a new physical format this year?

- Comment on Disc market share for week ending in 2025-11-07: The Fantastic Four is still on top, along with Godzilla. 5 weeks ago:
All the movie studios lobbied so hard to get their copy protection in and make sure you couldn’t skip warnings and ads, that the format is a pain to use, maybe worse than DVD.
Yeah, I think this definitely contributed to Blu-ray’s slow start. DRM does more harm than good.

It’s most likely for US/Canada only. And there are many reasons why DVD still outsells Blu-ray and 4K:
- Unawareness of, or indifference to, DVDs’ subpar video/audio quality.
- For most people, DVDs “just work”, unlike Blu-rays which require a lot of setup compared to DVD.
- Studios and manufacturers did a poor job of educating the public about the different formats.
- Streaming/digital is too convenient for the public to consider physical media.
- People are unable/unwilling to upgrade their tech.
- DVDs are cheaper and more ubiquitous than Blu-rays and 4K UHD discs.

Seriously, I’ve never seen it by this much before.
This is probably a fluke, but this could be a game-changer.

Looks like we’ve got a pretty even split between DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD in the pie chart!
